BORN AND RAISED IN TORONTO LET US INTRODUCE INDIE-POP ARTIST ‘VICTORIA STAFF’ WHO TAKES US ON HER JOURNEY, NEW SINGLE AND LIVE SHOWS COMING UP. READ OUR CHAT BELOW.

What is your names?
Victoria Staff

What is your genre of music?
Indie Pop.

Give us a little bio about you.
Born and raised in Toronto, music has always strung my life together, which developed into my career. Since working on my previous EP in 2022, I’ve been so incredibly lucky to puruse a dream of mine. I use music to tell stories about the best and worst of my life. I write music because I love to, I release it because I hope other people will feel the same.

What made you go into music?
Nothing and everything. I went into music because it makes me so incredibly happy and I stay in it for the love of the game. I’ve always said, ‘I’ll continue to be a musician as long as it feels right and makes my life better’, and I stick with it because it truly fills my life.

Who are your influences?
Women in music. Holly Humberstone, Olivia Dean, Chappell Roan, Stevie Nicks, Taylor Swift, Carole King, Jensen McRae. Across genres and across decades, the women in music and in songwriting continue to dominate my life and I’m so lucky to have these people who came before me to inspire me to create fun little songs for people to cry to.

Are you a signed?
No! If you know someone let me know lol.

You released your new latest Single ‘From My Side of the Table’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
This song is a reflection on a relationship – both the highs and lows. But more importantly it’s about not only realising you are in love, but it’s just falling apart in front of you.

Describe the track in two words.
Honest storytelling

What was the writing and recording process like?
I’m really lucky. ‘From My Side of the Table’ was one of those songs that fell out of my head and into my lap. I was on my way home from a really terrible birthday dinner, when the song just kind of came to me which doesn’t always happen. Some songs are a labour of love whereas this one was so simple – albeit devastating – to write.

Who did you work with on the single?
I worked with Johnathan Karkar and Luke Fair. It was such a special experience and the song came together so quickly. Both of them were so receptive to my ideas and when it comes to being in the studio I’m still learning a lot so I always appreciate someone who has the patience to answer my questions.

Can we expect a music video and if so tell us more about the making.
Sorry folks, no video. But you might see a video for a different song this year.

Can we expect an EP or album and if so, what can we expect from the creative process.
No, I released an EP last year and it was fulfilling but maybe a bit more than I wanted to take on. I think I’m in the “single” stage of my life – not relationships. Music.

Do you have any live shows coming up?
Yes! I will be playing the Dakota Tavern in Toronto on May 16th – but if you want updates on all my shows you should follow my IG @victoria_staff

Let us know where we can get tickets if so.

What else can we expect in 2024?
More music? Definitely more shenanigans. My goal for last year was to do a push up and I never achieved it, so maybe that?

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
To be honest, everything is moving so quickly right now and I’m just happy with it. So maybe on the same trajectory, just a bit further forward.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
It’s funny, when you asked this I had to dig a little bit. I don’t know if there’s a quote or saying I particularly live by as much as there are people. When I make decisions I think about the people around me – would they be proud? Will they laugh? It’s less about a string of words (ironic from a songwriter) more about the people in my life.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
1) a g&t on stage (it’s a superstition) 2) my younger sister 3) my setlist (yikes) 4) deodorant 5) to take the tuner off the end of my guitar

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
Yes! I’m victoria_staff on pretty much everything. But you can always check out www.victoriastaffmusic.com if you find you’re a bit lost.
