BRIGHTON AND HOVE INDIE-PUNK ARTIST ‘SELF TORQUE’ IS HERE WITH DEBUT EP ‘NO REST FOR THE DEPRESSED’ AND READY TO SHARE MORE ALL ABOUT IT IN OUR CHAT RIGHT HERE.

What are your names?
Gabriel

What is the bands name?
Self Torque

How did you come up with the bands name?
I wanted to call the band self talk as in toxic self talk, which I’m a huge fan of but it was taken so I changed the spelling to torque. I totally regret it

What is your genre of music?
I guess it’s kind of indie punk

Give us a little bio about you.
It’s kind of a solo project, I’ve been playing in bands for years and decided to try doing something on my own. Released an ep at the beginning of last year, very much a diy/play everything yourself record and since then it’s expanded to having my friends Luke and Jay playing with me which is real good fun.

What made you go into music?
I think watching a tom petty live vhs

Who are your influences?
Life’s rich tapestry

Are you a signed?
Yeah, to Not Saints. The UK’s only not for project recovery focused record label

You released your new latest EP ‘No Rest For The Depressed’, tell us more about the EP and the meaning behind the EP.
It was recorded at third circle recordings in Portslade, which is also where I live. With James Gasson on the controls and my dear friend Luke on drums. The songs share a kind of desperate energy. I wanted to keep it fast and concise with no real let up. The title came from something a friend said and it suited the vibe perfectly.

Describe each track in two words.
Daydream – boogie woogie
Anxiety in the uk – sore throat
No rest for the depressed – frosty jacks
Sea, stars and moon – key change
A retrospective – past mistakes

What was the writing and recording process like?
I had three songs knocking about and wrote two specifically for the release. No rest started as that main riff, very much influenced by ‘a giant dog’, and very naturally extended into a whole song. Daydream came in a flash after a nap, it’s kinda got a tom petty style riff and is the most vintage sounding song on the ep.

Who did you work with on the album?
Engineered by the wonderful James Gasson. Luke Ellis on drums and Mishkin Fitzgerald laid down some beautiful harmonies.

Are we expected to see any music videos from any of the tracks off the album.
There’s a video for no rest out now, check it!

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
In a surf band with Sharon Van Etten

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Consider the back story

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Ear plugs, wallet, keys, make up, fags

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
yes, I only really use insta so head there @selftorquemusic
