SPECIALISING IN MORE SOUL- ALT RNB AND POP MAURITIAN BORN SINGER-SONGWRITER ‘LUYAH’ TAKES US ON A JOURNEY WITH HIS MUSIC AND IS HERE WITH US TO CHAT NEW SINGLE ‘REMEDY’ AND TEASES THE NAME OF HIS EP!

What is your name?
I go by the name ‘luyah’, which is derived the word hallelujah but spelled in an alternative way. After playing around with many different names, this was the one I felt most connected to. Leonard Cohan may have had something to do with it.

What is your genre of music?
At present, I specialise in soul, alternative rnb and pop. However I don’t really constrict myself to genre, I love all different types of music and I’d like to dabble in a bit of everything.

Give us a little bio about you.
Sure. I’m a Mauritian born, Canberra bred artist. My love for soul and rnb inspired me to sing and write at a young age. I made my artist debut in 2022 with a single titled ‘Façade’. Which was then followed up with a 6 track EP titled ‘MIXED SIGNALS’.

What made you go into music?
My admiration for artists. I was (still am) inspired to give people the same level of relatability, reassurance, love, sadness and excitement I received through music.

Who are your influences?
Childish Gambino, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, The Weekend, Lucky Daye, Miguel, SZA, Aretha Franklin, Leonard Cohen, Prince and Freddy Mercury (just to name a few).

Are you a signed?
Not currently.

You released your new single ‘Remedy’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
Remedy is the first track of my new EP. With all my projects, I like to paint a narrative that has conflict and resolution. Remedy entails reuniting with an old lover unintentionally, acknowledging it did not end well whilst still feeling the friction of what was.

Describe the track in two words.
Fun & edgy.

What was the writing and recording process like?
Effortless. Every now and again a track will just flow through, this was one of those times. Running off the fumes of my first EP, this track formed with what felt like little effort.

Who did you work with on the single?
Kojo ‘Kay’ Ansah is the genius behind the mix. Could not have accomplished this without him.

Will we see a music video for ‘Remedy’ and if so, what can we expect from the creative process?
There will not be a music video for Remedy, however there is one in the works for an undisclosed track featured in my new EP.

Will we see an EP or Album and if so, what tell us more about it.
Yes, EP. It’s titled ‘NIGHTCRAWLER’ and without giving too much away its very retro inspired.

Do you have any live shows coming up?
Non currently planned. I will start making arrangements post the new EP release.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Not trying to sound egotistic but topping the charts and touching people’s hearts.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
A failure is a lesson if you grow from it.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
A good night’s sleep, water, vocal warm-up routine, a fly and comfortable fit and a small snack.

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
You can follow me on Instagram and on Spotify and all other platforms as luyah
