GROWING UP ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF MELBOURNE,AUSTRALIA AND MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN APART OF HER LIFE WE WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO INDIE POP – ROCK SINGER SONGWRITER ‘LILI-VIOLET’ TO THE WORLD! GIVE OUR CHAT A READ HERE.

What is your name?
Lili-Violet

What is your genre of music?
indie-pop/rock

Give us a little bio about you.
I grew up in the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia and have always been into music from a young age. Singing and acting all throughout my school life, it wasn’t until outside of school that I truly embraced the art of song-writing in the local council Musician Residency where I wrote and recorded my first single, ‘Doesn’t Mean You’re Lonely’ with Jarred Young. Since then I have done countless online live streams through lockdowns and through covid, I really began to understand my mental health, which lead to ‘Anxiety’s creation.

What made you go into music?
My Oma is a huge inspiration to my music and love for singing. She always sang around the house and I know she will always be on my team when I am performing. I also grew up in a household with a range of different music tastes around me which made it easier to express my emotions through different music styles that I later continued to do with my songwriting.

Who are your influences?
Odette, Lana Del Ray, Lady Gaga, Hope D

Are you signed?
No

You released your new single ‘Anxiety’, tell us more about the single.Mental health has always impacted me since I was young. I was your usual loud and ‘confident’ musical kid which lead to bullying etc throughout school and in turn ended up in me being extremely anxious from a young age. I wanted to turn how I feel into something that can be heard and understood and to hear if other people found it relatable.

What is the meaning behind the single?
‘Anxiety’ has to be my favourite song I have written to date. I aimed to simply state the physical symptoms people with anxiety get, and some of the helpful ideas we are provided by counsellors, psychologists, family and friends that we deem at the time to be not helpful but if we really tried, it’s a lot more helpful than we think. I wanted to use the bridge and the end chorus to almost demonstrate the feeling of consistent anxiety and the emotional outburst that anxiety causes and I have since received feedback from people saying that is exactly how it was perceived.

What was the writing and recording process like?
I wrote the song in about half an hour, after getting the chorus looping in my head one night after work. During the recording process (over several zoom sessions with Jarred), I made slight tweaks to the lyrics. We began the recording process over zoom in about Feb-March last year but due to Jarred being interstate and us both living opposite and busy lives, we finished it around October I think. I had never really recorded on my mac, let alone via zoom. It was definitely a learning experience for me. I recorded it in my wardrobe using jackets as the soundproofing and I just remember thinking, “This is the craziest thing I’ve done to record music”.

Describe the track in two words.
