STARTING IN THE MUSIC SCENE AT JUST 16 YEARS OLD EDMONTON’S ‘OLIVIA WIK’ TELLS US HER STORY, MORE ABOUT NEW SINGLE ‘LET’S DANCE’ AND WHATS TO COME! TAKE A READ HERE AND ‘LET’S DANCE’.

What is your name?
Hi, I’m Olivia Wik!

What is your genre of music?
I would classify myself as singer-songwriter, but most of what I write and record is pop music.

Give us a little bio about you.
I’m a musician from Edmonton, Canada. I consider myself to mostly be a songwriter but love releasing my own music as well. I’ve been writing for about 10 years and have been pursuing music in some kind of professional capacity since I was 16.
As a writer, I’ve had a number of songs cut by artists across the country, featured on Lifetime, Hallmark, and Netflix movies, CBC shows, YTV, and even had a song that I co-wrote appear on Hockey Night in Canada.

One of my proudest achievements recently came about. I had a song that I co-wrote be inducted to the New European Song Book – a collaborative project between the European Broadcasting Union and Eurovision. The song, “See You Again”, was performed by Ovi and Paula Seling as the Romanian submission for this project.
Now, I’m here to share her own music once again with my latest single, “Let’s Dance.”

What made you go into music?
I think that music has always been part of who I am. I’ve sang ever since I can remember.
I took singing and guitar lessons while growing up, and got into musical theatre as well. I think the catalyst to pursue music professionally came when I mastered a few chords on the guitar. I started writing songs and realized that I wanted to try and make a career out of creativity.

Who are your influences?
My influences are all over the place! However, I mostly resonate with Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Taylor Swift, Robyn, and Harry Styles. They’re all incredible lyricists.

Are you signed?
I’m not signed as an artist, but I have a publishing deal with Cymba Music Publishing here in Canada.

You released your new single ‘Let’s Dance’, tell us more about the single.
This is one of my favourite songs that I’ve ever written. It was inspired by that intense connection that you have with another person and allowing that connection to grow and spark. Some people ask me what inspired the song, but it truly came to me all at once. The writing process happened so quickly that it felt like I wrote it in no time at all. What I do love about this song is how retro it feels. I didn’t want to feel like I had to meet a certain standard or participate in a specific trend to make it sound a certain way. I wanted it to stand on its own and stand out with the old school vibe that it has. I’m so proud of this song and how it sounds. I waited a few years to release it, and I’m so happy that I finally did.

What is the meaning behind the single?
“Let’s Dance” is all about having an intimate and electric moment with someone that you have a connection with. It’s about having fun with that person, letting go, and truly enjoying yourself.

What was the writing and recording process like?
I wrote this song all on my own! I am exceptionally proud of that because it turned into an amazing final product. When I was writing it, it was a rare moment where I finished it in 30 minutes. Lyrics kept popping up in my mind so quickly that it made writing the song effortless. When I went into the studio to record, my awesome producers already had a track ready for me to listen to. It fit the vibe of the song so perfectly that I hopped right into the booth and started recording. It was so easy and fun. I think that you can her that energy come through on the track.

Describe the track in two words.
“Sexy” and “retro”.

Who did you work with on the single?
I wrote the song all by myself which is something that I am very proud of. I think Taylor Swift said in an interview that if she was to host a party for all the writers on one of her songs, it would just be her. I’m tempted to buy a cake and throw myself a little party specifically because of that quote.
I was lucky to work with an incredible production duo here in Edmonton. They go by Towers but are comprised of two awesome producers, Brandon Unis and Brad Simons. They always seem to know what’s in my head before I even say it

Will we see a Music video for ‘Let’s Dance’, what can we expect from the creative process?
I hope so! If I find the resources to make it happen, I would love to release a video for it. Some people have already been asking me to release one! I kind of have an idea of what I want the video to look like, and I hope that I can make it a reality one day soon.

Will we see an EP or Album and if so, can you give us a teaser of what to expect?
I don’t have any plans for an EP at this moment, but I do have another song coming out sometime this year. It’s called “Write Me in It” and it a big risk for me because it’s a dance-pop song. I have never explored the world of dance pop as an artist – only as a writer. So, I’m excited to share the song once it’s complete.

Do you have any live shows or a tour coming up and if so let us know where we can catch you at?
Where I live, everything is still pretty locked down, so no live shows for me just yet.

What else can we expect in 2022?
Like I mentioned, another single is coming your way in a few months, but I have hopes for releasing multiple songs this year. Hopefully that all pans out because I love sharing my music with as many people as possible.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Oh my gosh, I don’t even know! This is going to be a year full of change for me. I’m likely moving somewhere else but I’m not sure where. Once I find out where I’ll end up, I think I could give you a better picture of the next five years of my life. What I know for sure is that I want to be happy. Whatever I do, wherever I go, I want to be happy.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“Do what’s best for you.”

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
My capo, set list, extra batteries, converter, and 1/4inch chord. I like to be prepared!

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
