hey!! I’ve been well! Glad things are slowly getting busier! I’ve missed being busy! happy to be releasing music again 🙂
Give new fans/readers a little bio about you all as a band and your music.
Hey, I’m Natalie shay. I’m a 22 year old indie pop singer /songwriter / guitarist and BRIT school grad from north london. I would call my music ‘guitar breakup pop’, most of my songs are relationship heavy theme wise, but very focused and deep into specific scenarios or stories. I released my debut EP ‘NAKED’ in april 2020 and I’ve just released my latest track ‘medicine boy’!
You have released your new single ‘Medicine Boy’, tell us more about the writing/recording process of it.
I wrote this track with Will Paterson and Jemma Lou. I went up to Manchester to do a couple writing sessions with them. We wrote this track on day 1 and we loved it so much that on day 2, rather than writing another track, we just recorded the official vocal for medicine boy instead! I listened to that first mix the entire 4 hour drive back to London that night and I knew it would be the next single! We then remotely finished up the production over the coming months, Will also mixed it beautifully!
What is the meaning behind the single?
Medicine Boy plays on the theme of comparing a fresh dysfunctional relationship with a boy, to a drug. The lyrics are written so that if I told you the whole song was about an addictive relationship, it would make sense.. But if I also told you the whole song was about recreational drug use, every line would still make sense. I wanted to capture the essence of a bitter sweet relationship, the way – you know it’s bad for you, you know you can do better, but it’s not bad enough to make you want to leave, and the ‘highs’ of the romance are too good to walk away from.
Will we see a video for ‘Medicine Boy‘?
YES! The music video actually just came out on July 9th! you can check it out on my youtube now!
What else can we expect in 2021?
There’s soo much more music! The only reason I was holding off was because I released the last EP in the pandemic and wanted to give the next one a chance to get played live! I have so much more to come yay!
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Hopefully continuing with music as my full time job, doing what I’m doing now but with a bigger audience and a ton more music! I hope to connect with people through my music for the rest of my life 🙂
