INTRODUCING TORONTO’S FOLKTRONIC DUO ‘NEW RIVER BEACH’. I GOT TO HAVE A CHAT TO MARK & MARNEY ALL ABOUT THEIR NEW RELEASE, WHAT ELSE THEY HAVE PLANNED AND MORE. GIVE IT A READ RIGHT HERE.

What are your names?
Mark and Marney

What is the band’s name?
New River Beach

How did you come up with the band’s name?
New River Beach is our favourite place near Saint John, NB, Canada – Marney’s home town.

What is your genre of music?
folktronica, electronic, new wave, indie pop

Give us a little bio about you.
We are a husband-and-wife indie outfit based in Toronto. We have both been in many bands in Toronto, but never together. Last year, we formed New River Beach and started recording in our basement studio. Since then, we have released three songs. We are both professors (and parents); making music together is not about escaping those identities but a pathway to merge emotions and mechanics of everyday life into something new.

Who are your influences?
Dirty Three, Caribou, Stereolab, Belle and Sebastian, Broadcast, Grateful Dead

Are you a signed?
No

Your new single ‘More or Less’ is out, tell us more about the single.
‘More or less’ is our third release. Marney played almost all the instruments on the track. After laying down all the parts to the song, Mark used his production and sampling skills to shape the track into three distinct parts. We wrote this song as a triptych. You can hear layers of instruments in each part, from a Pro One synth, to a mini drum kit, to a piano. We added a Cassio keyboard and slide guitar. The result is a pop inspired song with rolling synths and elevating vocals.

Who did you work with on the single?
Just us in our home studio!

Describe the track in two words.
Jaunty electro

Will we see a Music Video for the any of the tracks and if so, what can we expect?
Maybe but nothing yet.

What else can we expect in 2021?
More singles! The next is in the works and we plan to continue releasing songs, working together.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
We want to build a small rural studio – a place for connection, music making, and relaxation – to produce others music and our own.
