What are your names?
Caroline on vocals, Alex on guitar, and Ian on drums.

What is the band’s name?
We’re called Safety Net!

How did you come up with the band’s name?
When Alex and I (Caroline) first decided to start the band, we both brainstormed a long list of ideas for band names. We had so many lists and we couldn’t agree on any of the names. “Safety Net” just happened to be one of the better names on one of my lists. It ended up in our shortlist and ultimately won against all of the others. To me the name is kind of a play on how for a lot of people the music and bands they listen to are their safe place, or an escape from certain things – like a “safety net” between them and the rest of the world.

Give us a little bio about the band.
Alex and I (Caroline) have been good friends since my freshman year of college back in 2013.  We formed Safety Net in late 2017. We were actually writing a song together originally meant for a different band we were both in at the time, which had more of an indie-pop sound. We finished the demo and sent it to our other bandmates who all said they liked it – but it sounded “like a pop-punk song”. I had wanted to front a pop-punk or alt-rock band since I was like, 13, and Alex and I are both really into that genre of music, so we kind of just looked at each other and were like, “yeah, why haven’t we done this yet?”
We spent 2018 recording and releasing our EP “Wake Up” and filming our first music video. Alex put out some posts online looking for a drummer and Ian responded and started playing with us earlier this year. Since then we’ve been playing around Atlanta and, of course, writing and recording new songs together!

Tell us all about the new single.
“How Does It Feel?” is about feeling depressed, or anxious, or overwhelmed, or numb to everything around you – or just in general, suffering or going through something that makes you feel alone – and wondering if you are the only one who feels this way. It’s about the feeling you get when you’re in a room full of people but you still feel by yourself. Sometimes when you’re suffering you become very isolated and you start to feel like you’re experiencing everything around you from behind a thick pane of glass and you just become desperate to know if anyone else feels the same way. That’s the feeling we were trying to capture with this song.

Who did you work with on the single?
Greg Hendler of GMH Audio in Atlanta! We recorded the track at his studio and he mixed and mastered it as well!

What was the writing and recording process like?
I (Caroline) wrote the lyrics and then brought them to Alex and Ian with a basic melody and the piano arrangement. I tried to make the song feel like a story and be as honest as possible with everything I was saying. It was actually the first track that we’ve written together since Ian joined the band. It was a really good experience for us and I think it gave us an even better understanding of each other and how we all sort of “tick” musically. saying.
Recording was a lot of fun as well. Working with Greg was great and he had a lot of great suggestions and ideas for us throughout the process that really helped push the track in the right direction.

Describe the track in two words.
Honest and emotional.

Do you have any live shows coming up?
We’re opening for The Second After and Alone I Walk at The Masquerade (in Atlanta) on Wednesday November 6th!

What else can we expect this year?
We’ll probably spend the rest of 2019 playing whatever shows we’re able to and writing more new music to share with everyone in 2020!
