What  are your names?

Morissa & Lucas

What is the duos name.

Misty Mtn

How did you come up with the name?

We were trying to come up with a name and kept playing around with “Misty Mtn,” but weren’t 100% sure. Then we watched the Ken Burns documentary ‘Vietnam’ and at the credits the Bob Dylan song, “A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall” came on and one of the lines is, “I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains” and we just knew.

What is your genre of music?

We call it dark mountain pop.

Give us a little bio about you.

Brooklyn-based duo Morissa Trunzo and Lucas Segall joined musical forces under the moniker Misty Mtn in late 2017. Influenced by their western roots – Morissa having grown up singing at the rodeo in Montana and Lucas in indie bands in his hometown of Los Angeles – they weave together western style, Icelandic aesthetic, & Brooklyn beats to create a distinct style of synth pop they call “dark mountain pop.”

What made you go in to music?

We both grew up with music. Morissa writing songs in Montana, Lucas playing in the orchestra. Obviously our styles of music evolved as we grew up, but the love of music was always there.

Are you a signed?

Not to a label, nope!

You are set to release a cover of ‘Float On’ coming out on March 20th, tell us the reason behind the the reason you chose it.

We initially came up with the cover when we were opening for Rainbow Kitten Surprise in Vancouver, Canada, but the more we played it live, the more people loved it. We think the song is still so relevant and Isaac Brock, the lead singer, is originally from Montana too so we were like… yes!

You are also gearing up to release your DEBUT EP in May,tell us what to expect from it.

An exciting new chapter for Misty Mtn! We’re gonna have some of our older songs on there but also some new ones. On the new ones… we just let ourselves go crazy creatively. It’s really exciting.

Describe each track in two words.

We’re gonna do something a little different. We want to let you in on a secret, the tracks, are going to take you on a journey. Every emotion under the sun will be on that EP.

What was the writing process like?

It’s always evolving which is something that’s very important to us. Sometimes we write a song just sitting on the couch with an acoustic guitar and dig deep into how or what we are feeling. Other times we start in the studio at the computer and look up inspiration on Pinterest to lead the music’s direction using a visual reference.

What was the recording process like?

The recording process is very self-contained. We do 95% of the vocals in our home studio as well as the entirety of the track. Two of the songs we recorded with Ariel Loh (of Yoke Lore, Drinker) but those were the only times we went outside our home.

What is the meaning behind the title of your new EP?

We haven’t announced the title of our EP yet 😉

Who did you work with on the EP with?

Ariel Loh (Yoke Lore, Drinker), Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, Salt Cathedral)

Do you have any shows coming up or a tour in planning?

We’re playing a  release show at a private location in New York on April 24th for our next single leading into the EP, and then we’re throwing a big EP release party in May (details to be announced!)

And regarding tour…. keep your ears and eyes open, we may have a little surprise coming up.

If so where will you be heading?

NYC and beyond

What else can we expect in 2019?

Lots of music, some really great brand partnerships, MERCH!, and a really exciting new live show

Do you have any collaborations coming up with any up coming artists?

Mainly just focusing on Misty Mtn, but we have co-written a few songs with some up and comers that will be coming out soon. Stay tuned!

Would you be up for collaborations if other musicians wanted one with you? and who would they have to contact?

Absolutely! We do writing sessions quite a bit. They’d have to contact our manager, Wallace Morgan.

Do you play any instruments?

LOL Lucas plays EVERY instrument, not even kidding. Morissa plays piano and guitar.

Who are your influences?

Fleetwood Mac, Bjork, Bob Dylan, Sylvan Esso, Kacey Musgraves

How do you get inspiration to write songs?

Usually it starts with discussing what we’ve been through and want to write about or what someone we know is going through and we just build upon that.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?

Touring, writing incredible music both for ourselves and others and hopefully having a really amazing and loyal fan base.

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?

Well Morissa is also an actor and Lucas composes musicals so it keeps us pretty busy, but we also love biking, cooking, and going to shows.

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more in to the music scene?

We both heard Cactus Tree by Joni Mitchell A LOT growing up and it really inspired us a lot.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

Stop saying if, and start saying when.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and  just as an artist?

Do you! Stop looking at what other people are doing and use that as your roadmap. You are creating a journey that is all your own, and that’s enough.
