INTRODUCING THE BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘SHOUT’ AND THE ARTIST BEHIND THE TRACK ‘TROPHY KID DIZ’, CHECK OUT OUR CHAT RIGHT HERE!

What  is your names?

Trophy kid but my friends call me Diz…
So “Trophy Kid Diz.”
Real name Dustin Overhill….
That’s a lot of names.

What is your genre of music?
I like to think I’m a mixture of everything that I’m influenced by from Motown forward.
I would say hip hop with pop sensibilities but I’m constantly changing.
By the time you read this I could be s country artist. You never know!

Give us a little bio about you.
Born in (East)Vancouver, British Columbia…
Was going to try and be a professional skateboarder but was sidelined by injury.
Also I was super wild and couldn’t focus on anything but partying till I realized I could put words together easily.
At this point it was a party trick but in the grand scheme of things if it wasn’t for music and the people I’ve met through it, I would most likely be dead. It saved my life 100%.

What made you go in to music?
I’ve always been around music. My grandpa was a professional drummer and my mom used to write poetry. I loved piano from an early age and I guess i just fell into it all.

Are you a signed?
I was signed to Sony music Canada with the group PRTY H3RO but I am currently releasing my new project as an Indy. We will see what happens! It’s a different industry these days. Things can literally change overnight.

You released your new single ‘Shout’,tell us more about it.

It’s a remake of the classic Tears for fears song “Shout.”
Took literally forever (a full year) to get the rights to release it and I did 4 different versions! Lol
I might actually release a darker version for fun. Why not.

What was the writing process like?
I generally write alone always. I just wrote it in my basement I guess…I wish I had a cooler story lol.
The hook was already done so there was all the hard work!

What was the recording process like

First version I recorded was with my mentor and friend producer Jeff Dalziel, which I still wanna release as a remix if I can. The second final version was done with my bro and current producer extraordinaire Dajaun Martineau aka Dajaun da God.
We have lots of fun…

What is the message you want listeners to take from the single?
I wanted it to mean “use your voice to speak your mind”and be Inspirational and hopeful. Basically don’t let anyone hold you down. Do you. I sound like a Nike campaign.

Describe the track in two words.
Finally released.

You also released the music video, what was the making process like?
I was a super sick spot in Toronto called Neon Demon and it was great! Colors are insane in there and the homie Miguel Fuentes is a god with a camera.  I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a full  music video tho. To me it was just a promo visual to accompany the track. First of many!

Will we see a EP or Album this year?

Aiming for next spring but I’m like half done and very proud so far!

Do you have gigs coming up or a tour in planning?

For sure planning an album release party and will be working on plotting a tour with someone!

If so where are you thinking of heading?

Probably across Canada again. I’ve done it about 4 times but never as a solo act.

What else can we expect from you this year?
I have something special that I plan to release as promo for the EP which I think will be beautiful.

Do you have any collaborations coming up with any up coming artists?
Trying to see if I can make this record alone as a mission statement but I’m thinking of a couple people. I do have producers who are Putting as much input as any collaborator tho!

Would you be up for collaborations if other musicians wanted one with you? and who would they have to contact?

Always! I love making music with anyone!

Go to my Instagram and msg the kid!
@trophykiddiz
Do you play any instruments?

I am a classically trained pianist and I also have teaching level theory.

Who are your influences?
I love old Motown shit. I’m really into great songwriting (even tho I suck at songwriting lol).
Love Nas, big L, Pun… Biggie.
I have been listening to Kanye west – college dropout a lot lately.
It honestly changes everyday.
I also love ed Sheeran. He’s a genius.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?
Generally just life experience. Sometimes if I’m not actively doing shit I’m not inspired but me and my wife just had a baby so emotions have been everywhere lol.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?Hopefully in Cali or Vancouver again and just playing a shitload of shows and making music everyday. I love performing…

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?
Hang out with wifey, my step son Aidan and my 7 week old Aurora! Watch lots of Netflix, and be a hypebeast.
I thrift a lot of sportswear, collect snspbacks, and sneakers.
Trying to get my body able to skate again.

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more in to the music scene?
Nas – Halftime. I was about 8.
Thank you Dyllin for giving me the gift of that record.
