LONDON ARTIST ‘MARIAM’ CHATS TO ME ABOUT HER DEBUT EP ‘HEART TO HEART’ AND WHAT GIGS ARE NEXT FOR HER!

What is your name? My name is Mariam
What is your genre of music?

Atmospheric soul which is a blend of pop, soul, folk and alternative easy listening.

Give us a little bio about you.

So I am a singer songwriter from south london who plays the guitar, I love to sing and to tell stories through song.

You released your debut single ‘Be There For Me’ , tell us more about that.

So be there for me was releases in October and is the first release from my debut EP ‘Heart to Heart’ It is about moments when you are giving your all to people but not getting anything back, it just speaks about how that feels and thought process we go through in those moments.

You released an Acoustic Video for the track on Premier Unsigned, how did that come about?

Well I have been on the unsigned show before when I released my song ‘Selah’, so after ‘be there for me’ came out I was invited back to do a live session and talk about the EP with the host Loretta Andrews who is a brilliant host with a real eye for unsigned talent. I was very happy to have them premier the acoustic video, it was great fun.
What was the video process like on Premier Unsigned?

It was very quick actually, they had set the room before I arrived so I just showed up and sang, was a relaxed environment which always makes it nice to work in.
Who did you work with on the song?

I worked with OL music who are an amazing production team, this song in particular I wrote with Feranmi Oguns after a conversation we had at the studio, it actually came out of another song i wrote, but after talking and dissecting it, we ended up with ‘Be there for me’ which sounds much better lol

Do you have any videos for any of your other tracks to be released?

Got some plans for a video or two, hopefully will be ready in the coming year.

Can you tell us more about your Debut EP?

So the EP is called ‘Heart to Heart’ and is really just that, a conversation, my favourite ones are heart to heart convos the type you have with close friends where you can just be you. This EP came about from that type of conversation with Feranmi at the studio, so it felt right to call it that.

It is just a thread of stories about various points in life, the good the bad and the inbetween, and just looking at how you feel in those moments, the honest feelings that we have, we can all relate to love, loss, fear and joy. So it’s just me sharing my heart in various moments in life in hopes that the listeners will be able to relate.

Describe each song in three words.

Oh that’s hard……ok here goes!

Be there for me- honest, firm and soulful

What I want- Soft, pensive and simple

Without You- vulnerable, redemptive and atmospheric

Grow- jazzy, confident and fun

Running- Epic, big and deep

What made you go into music?

I have always loved music, I loved singing and grew up singing in church and school. It is something that always came back to me even though I done other things, I just loved watching my favourite artists, and seeing how much they inspired and moved people was so amazing to me, there is definitely something so powerful and spiritual about music, and I just love it.

I do, I play the guitar
Who are your influences?

Stevie wonder, Bill Withers, Lauryn hill, Joni Mitchell, Asa, a whole load of gospel music, so many influences, I just love great music.
How do you get inspiration to write songs?

In many ways, sometimes through something I read, watched, something that has happened or through people. I’m inspired by life, I can just sit somewhere and watch the world go by which helps me to just start writing.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?

I see myself doing alot more singing and songwriting, performing and sharing my music around the world

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more in to the music scene?

It was a song called ‘moving forward’ by Israel Houghton, it really inspired me and encouraged me to go for it.
What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

It’s hard to say, my mother is always filling me with wisdom, but off the top of my head one was ‘be who you were created to be, you have every right to shine’
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?

I would say, don’t give up, it is hard but the more you go, the more you grow, start where you are and be confident in who you are and the gifts and talent that you have to offer, and enjoy the journey.
What quote or saying do you always stick by?

‘Above all things guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.’ It’s a proverb
