THE ŌTAUTAHI, NZ BAND REIGNITING EMO WITH HARDCORE ENERGY AND READY TO SHOW YOU WHO THEY ARE WE WANT TO INTRODUCE ‘ONLY YOU’ AND THEIR MUSIC RIGHT HERE. READ OUR CHAT BELOW.

What are your names?
Birdie (Vocals)
Chazz (Guitar)
Dom (Bass)
Jarod (Guitar)
Daniel (Drums)

Birdie and Chazz are also married!

What is the bands name?
Only You!

How did you come up with the bands name?
We were reading the back of chemical bottles under our sink for inspiration and one bottle had a line on it like “just for you” or something like that. We eventually narrowed it down to “Only You” after some chat.

What is your genre of music?
We take most of our inspiration from different waves of emo throughout history and we fall under the “emo” umbrella as a result.

Give us a little bio about you.
Only You are an Ōtautahi band combining melodies and guitars fuelled by 90s emo nostalgia with performances inspired by the intensity of modern hardcore. Formed in 2022, Only You have been performing high intensity shows across the country and dropped music regularly that fans of any genre suffixed by “core” seem to like!

What made you go into music?
Chazz and I (Birdie) have always been interested in music. My dad has the biggest CD collection I’ve ever seen in my life so it was only natural I got involved with music. I also saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs when I was about 6 which was a big deal. Karen O is still a huge inspiration for me.

Chazz started playing guitar at the tail end of high school and got involved in live music at University through the music club Tunesoc. That’s actually where he met Daniel!

Who are your influences?
Our music tastes are quite diverse, but the major influences in terms of songwriting are 90s emo bands like The Get Up Kids, and more modern post hardcore acts like Title Fight.

Are you a signed?
While we aren’t signed to a particular label in the traditional sense, we do work with our friend Will and his Label called Softball Ln, as well as Bread and Butter Music for Distribution.

You are releasing your new single ‘8011’ tell us more about the song and how it came about for you as a band.
8011, and honestly all of our songs are written the same way. Chazz brings a riff, chords, or a general song structure to practice and the rest of the band just loop the parts over and over until we’ve worked our way to the end of the song.   It’s a really collaborative process, Chazz might bring the general structure but the floor is open for everyone to add their own part and make suggestions on the direction of the song.   After the instruments are done, I (Birdie) will work out a vocal melody and write lyrics to add on top.

Describe the track in two words.
Loud! Fast!

What was the writing and recording process like?
Same as above for songwriting :))

Will we see an album or EP and If so, can you tease us about it.
As of right now we have no plans set in stone. We are going to play out the remaining gigs for the year and see where 2027 takes us. We usually have a

Do you have any live shows coming up and if so, what can we expect from your shows?
We are playing a show on the 24th of July with a band from the North Island called Menzies! We do have another big show booked but cannot speak on it yet :)))

Where will we be able to  buy tickets from?
Most, if not all of our gig tickets can be found on  the Under The Radar website.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
PLAYING OURBREAK FEST PLEASE!

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“Soundcheck is a practice, lets just do it then.”

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
How to play the songs (hopefully)
Beer
Wine
Our bass player
Snack for the ride home

We know New Zealand’s  longest running TV soap is Shortland Street, what would a ‘Only You’ scene look like if you was to get a part?
Truly I have no idea what happens on Shortland Street. We could be like an industry plant band who gets a disproportionate amount of screen time because we know someone behind the scenes. Like that band in Coyote Ugly if you’ve ever seen that movie.

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
Our primary social media is Instagram
We are also on Bandcamp! Just search Only You!
