Give us a little bio about you.
My name is Tanis. I am a Singaporean, French and Bahamian singer-songwriter and composer. My dad has always had a bit of a nomadic nature so I spent my childhood years moving from country to country every two to four years. I found solace and stability amongst all the changes in my love of music. This love of music soon became my full time job, after I went to study music theory and composition at NYU Steinhardt and began working as a film composer and songwriter. I released my debut EP last year and am really excited to have just released my first single of 2026 “The Bad One.”

What made you go into music?
I could say that the fact that my dad always had instruments around the house made me a musician, but my brother was also exposed to those instruments and he works in finance! I think very simply said, I genuinely can’t imagine my life if I wasn’t making music, and I have felt that way for as long as I can remember. Building arrangements, writing songs, it just makes me ridiculously happy.

Who are your influences?
I have quite a varied taste in music and find inspiring elements across all genres. That being said, not as a direct influence but I absolutely do love to examine the work of Bon Iver. The sonic world the band and Justin Vernon have created across various albums is stunning.

Are you signed or an independent artist?
I am an independent artist. 

You released a new single ‘The Bad One’, tell us more about the song and the meaning behind it.
“The Bad One” is all about perspectives and ultimately, the acceptance of those various perspectives. Most of us walk around telling our own narrative, we are the heroes and protagonists of our own stories, but we could also very much be the villain in someone else’s story arc, and no amount of arguing and persuading can change that. “The Bad One” is accepting the role you’ve been given by someone else in their story if that is what they need.

What was the writing and recording process like?
I wrote the song about two years ago just on synth keys with a block chord progression, and though I liked the composition, something about it felt a little flat, so the song ended up on my long backlog of partially finished demos. In December last year over the winter break, I took the song back out and wrote a bass line that closely mimicked the vocal rhythm, and suddenly the song took a whole different shape and I like it again. But now that I found a base arrangement that I was happy with, I really wanted to bring it to someone who could help me finish the production and mix because I think at this point I had laboured over the song for too long and needed fresh ears. That was when I brought the song to Danny Monk, a producer with a CV that speaks for itself and he just brought another level to the track. We spent 5 days at his studio in London adding new layers of live instruments, including guitars, bass, drums, a variety of synths and fresh vocals. I really love the way it sounds today and so happy to share it!

Who did you work with on the song?
The song was a collaboration between myself and Danny Monk. Danny helped produce, mix, and program the track, and also performed several of the instruments. We worked closely together throughout the process to bring the song to life.

Will we see a music video for the single and if so can you tell us about the creative process.
Sadly, this time there is no music video!

Will we see an EP or album and if we do what can we expect from the creative process?
No plans for an album in 2026, but I do have 2 more singles that will come out later this year. Those 2 singles very much have their own musical identities as well, because for me the arrangement always needs to match the sentiment and theme of the lyrics. “The Bad One” has this nonchalant vocal delivery and therefore the laid back pulsing bass line felt right. My next two singles have very different themes and therefore their arrangements will hopefully surprise you! And then hopefully we can get an album together for 2027!

Will we see any live shows or a tour coming up or in planning, if so what can you tell us about it?
Yes! I currently have a live show I am headlining in Wimbledon in the UK at The Cove on July 30th. It is a very intimate acoustic set up so please come along to listen and say hi!

What else can we expect in 2026?
I have two more songs that I am releasing this fall, also co-produced with Danny Monk, and I have plans for a few more live shows in the fall across the UK with my amazing band.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 years?
Still making music in whatever capacity I can!

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
There are quite a few quotes that I stick by, but since right now we are talking about my new single “The Bad One”, perspectives and being accused of various things, one quote I am feeling a lot lately is “If you have a problem with me, call me. If you don’t have my number, then you don’t know me well enough to have a problem with me”. People have a lot of unkind things to say especially with socials today where you can anonymously be mean to someone. But those people don’t have my phone number so I no longer let those things affect me.
