MONTREAL BASED PROJECT ‘FAWNA’ TAKES US ON A EVOLVING SOUND WITH ALT-RNB WITH HINTS OF NEO-SOUL. I GOT THE CHANCE TO CHAT ALL NEW MUSIC AND WHAT ELSE IS TO COME. READ IT NOW

What are your names?
My real name is Jenna Deagle-Potter.

What is the band’s name?
My solo project is called FAWNA.

How did you come up with the band’s name?

FAWNA has a couple of special meanings for me. When I moved from Nova Scotia to Montreal,
I wanted to keep a strong connection to nature. Deer have always been my spirit animal, so
FAWNA just felt right. The spelling is also a tribute to my mom, Shawna, who was one of my
biggest supporters

What is your genre of music?
It’s primarily Alternative R&B with hints of Neo-Soul, but I’ve been experimenting with EDM
lately. My sound is always evolving.

Give us a little bio about you.
I grew up in Nova Scotia and started exploring music at a young age. My early days were spent
singing in bands in Halifax’s indie scene, which helped me develop as a musician. Even though
I’d been writing songs for years, I didn’t feel confident enough to step out on my own back then.
Everything changed when I moved to Montreal. The music and arts community here gave me
the inspiration and support I needed to figure out my sound and identity as an artist. That’s
when FAWNA was born. In 2016, I released my debut EP, Vol. 1, which marked the start of my solo journey. In 2019, I
collaborated with Cobrayama on an EP called Clear. After spending the next few years
exploring my sound and working with other artists, I released Vol. 2 in November 2024. This EP
reflects themes of growth, resilience, and the beauty of vulnerability. Now, I’m gearing up for my
2025 tour and excited to see where this journey takes me next.

What made you go into music?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. Even as a kid, I dreamed of being a singer. For
me, it’s always been a way to channel emotions and turn my life experiences into something
meaningful and beautiful.

Who are your influences?
I’ve been influenced by so many artists over the years. Early on, it was Alicia Keys, Billie
Holiday, and Fiona Apple. Then I discovered Erykah Badu and Aaliyah, which deepened my
love for R&B. I also grew up on ’90s alt-rock, and that has influenced me lyrically for sure.

Are you signed?
Nope, I’m an independent artist, but I’ve been building an amazing team around me.

Near the end of 2024, you released Vol. 2. Tell us more about the making and the reaction you
received.

Vol. 2 was definitely a labor of love! It’s a collection of songs I wrote over the last few years, but
many were reworked as I grew and evolved. It was a deeply personal project that explored
everything from tumultuous relationships to finding self-love and acceptance. This was also my biggest project yet—I even self-produced a track for the first time. I had the
chance to work with some incredibly talented people, and it’s been so rewarding to see people
connect with the themes of empowerment and vulnerability.

Describe each track in two words.
1 – Nola – Hope, Sensitivity
2 – Energy – Empowered, Unapologetic
3 – Hawk – Feminine Rage
4 – Disposition – Mysterious, Dreamy
5 – Feels – Playful Love
6 – Flutter – Alchemy, Acceptance

What was the writing and recording process like?
The process was very personal and cathartic. Writing each song became a way to process
moments of growth and healing, and I spent a lot of time reworking them to ensure they felt
authentic. Most of the recording took place in my home studio, which posed some challenges
but allowed me to dig deep and work on my own time. I’m incredibly grateful for everything I
learned along the way.

Who did you work with on the EP?
I worked with some incredibly talented people on Vol. 2. Producers Cobrayama, Blazino, and Sung helped shape the sound of the EP, each bringing their unique touch to the tracks. I also had the Sung helped shape the sound of the EP, each bringing their unique touch to the tracks.
I also had the privilege of collaborating with two amazing artists, Blanche and Ero Sin. Blanche’s
contribution to ‘Hawk’ was especially powerful, as her vocals added such a raw, emotional depth
to the track. Ero Sin, who I worked with on ‘Nola,
‘ brought his own style and energy, adding
another meaningful layer to the song. My friend Jesse Mancini added basslines on Flutter and
Disposition, and Cobrayama brought in pianist Ian Gilley for a few tracks. Simon Petraki from
Seratone Studio mixed and mastered the EP, and his attention to detail really brought everything
together. Each collaboration and the overall production process really enhanced the vision I had for this project, and I’m so grateful for everyone’s creative input and support.

Do you have any live shows coming up?
Yes! I’m currently preparing for my 2025 tour, which will include Montreal and, hopefully, an
East/West coast run. I can’t wait to share the energy of Vol. 2 live. Keep an eye on my social
media for updates!

Let us know where we can get tickets if so.
Tickets will be available on my website and through social media once dates are announced.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to have grown as an artist and expanded my reach globally. Touring, creating
music that resonates with people, and collaborating with more incredible artists are all part of
the vision.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I remind myself of this whenever I feel the urge to overwork a song or project. Sometimes, the
first spark of creative energy is the most pure, and it’s important not to lose that magic by
over-finessing. You have to trust your creative instincts and know when to step away.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?

  • Tea with lemon and honey
  • Lozenges
  • Laptop
  • Merch/Stickers
  • Good Vibes
