What are your names?
Josh McCabe (guitar and Vocals)
Jamie Ball (Lead guitar/vocals)
And more recently – Brent Lively (Drums), who you’ll see in photos coming up!
What is the bands name?
The Band Caves
How did you come up with the bands name?
It actually started when I recorded a bunch of songs back in 2014, and there was a bit of a theme. I had gone through a burnout/breakdown, where I needed to step away from almost everything for about a year to refocus and reset my life. I called it my “Caves” season of life. When I finished the songs, I had a chance to perform them with a friend, and we were doing shows as a duo, and we needed a name, so we just called the band Caves. We later had to add in “The Band”, cause there was a punk band in the UK getting mad at us all the time haha
What is your genre of music?
It’s a little bit of country, a little bit of rock n roll. That guitar driven music has always been important to me, and my favourite style of country, so I like to say its country rock n roll.
Give us a little bio about you.
I grew up in the church (Josh McCabe), and my dad grew up playing Christian Rock N roll. I know it sounds funny to say, but they were pretty influential in that world in the 80s. Music was always special to me, and I started singing songs in church as young as 16, because nobody else in the youth band wanted to sing. I then ended up playing for different bands over the years, producing some records, and then ended up being a pastor in a church for several years, while still finding ways to make music and tour. More recently, I’ve been focused on songwriting, producing, and working with an exciting new artist named Sully Burrows, but I still find time for this project. I love playing music, I love songs that have a meaning and that tell a story.
What made you go into music?
I covered a bunch of it up above, but it was really something that I was abnormally good at when I was really young. In my teen years it helped me find community, and my love for all things music related just grew and grew.
Who are your influences?
Some of my personal favourite bands and artists are NEEDTOBREATHE, Switchfoot, Brothers Osbourne, Chris Stapleton.
Are you a signed?
Technically yes.. I created a small indie label called Royal City Music Group about a year ago, and thats our home!
You released your latest Single ‘High On The Moment’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
I wrote the song High On The Moment about my wife and our journey. We got married young, and it felt like all the moments of life just kept passing by so fast. We found out we were expecting our first child only 4 weeks after our honeymoon, and it’s been a wild ride ever since.
Describe the track in two words.
Energetic and fun
What was the writing and recording process like?
The song was actually written almost a year before even recording it. Recording is tough when you’re on the go, so pieces of the song were kind of recorded everywhere and in several different studios.
Who did you work with on the single?
I worked with Austin Cannon for production and Stephen Von Heyking (A fellow Canadian)
Will we see a music video for ‘High On The Moment’. Tell us more about the creative process and making of it.
I’m hoping we can get a video done at some point, but the scheduling hasn’t allowed for a proper music video. HOWEVER, we have a really cool live music video of it, with live audio from a show – which I think you’ll dig:
Can we expect an Album or EP and If so, what can we expect from it?
We’re going to be releasing some new songs in the new year, and have a full EP coming out next spring!
Do you have any live shows coming up?
We’re got a couple live shows coming up with the band, including one in my hometown of Port Perry, ON with Steven Lee Olsen!
What else can we expect in 2024?
New music, new videos, some really fun cover songs.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
I love being part of artist development and I love helping younger artists find their way. I may not be the most successful example, but I’ve made lots of mistakes that I’ve learned from over the years, and I’m always happy to share what I know. Im hoping to play lots of shows with the band, and continue working with young artists like Sully Burrows
What quote or saying do you always stick by?
I have a few, but a main one I say all the time is, “the best songs are not just written, they’re lived.”
When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Easy: My guitar, a spare shirt (hah), boots, Merch (I love when people connect with the band by getting Merch), and finally, this is slightly strange, but I bring my oil diffuser and put Eucalyptus in it before the show.
