What is your names?
India Arkin
What is your genre of music?
Psychedelic / Alt rock
Give us a little bio about you.
India Arkin was introduced to the world with a thunderous start, moving to the North East to study Fine Art at university, Arkin was quickly scouted + signed to HMV’s first ever distribution deal with 1921 Records; putting her face on the page of Forbes, NME, and more – as well naming her a National Album Day ambassador alongside the likes of Sam Ryder, Franz Ferdinand, and KSI. Clearly cementing her name as one to watch from the very beginning.
What made you go into music?
I was inspired to go into music after meeting people in St Albans music scene who captured my imagination in a whole new way. I was always a creative, having studied fine art my entire life, however I found that music became a whole new avenue in which for me to creatively release – so when I moved to Newcastle in the lockdown I began my solo project and everything took off from there…
Who are your influences?
Wolf Alice, The Last Dinner Party, Phoebe Alice Lou and Matilda Mann.
Are you a signed?
I was previously signed by HMV’s label, 1921 records but am now moving forward as an independent artist.
You released your latest Single ‘Senseless’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
Senseless is about dating someone who you know isn’t good for you, but doing it anyway – its an honest encapsulation of chaos, and lust, a true sonic thunderstorm.
Describe the track in two words.
Ethereal catharsis.
What was the writing and recording process like?
We had an amazing time co-producing this single with – the amazing – Will Stephenson (Logue Audio) down south. I had written the song the year before and sat with it for a long time before I brought it to the studio, helping to evolve it from its intimate solo piece to a full band masterpiece. We spent 3 days recording out of Will’s tiny old childhood bedroom, truly DIY bedroom rock at its finest!
Who did you work with on the single?
We had Adam Sams on lead guitar and bass, Neil Jobanputra on drums and myself on vocals and rhythm guitar as well as co-producing alongside Will Stephenson who also played synth for us on the track.
Can we expect a music video and if so tell us more about the making.
Yes! We are releasing our first ever music video alongside this release. We worked with the ever fabulous Rob Irish on producing the music video and its been non-stop fun from start to finish. I wont give away too much – but expect the most maximalist rock video ever: fire, african trees and a pinch of studio shred epicness to finish everything off.. keep your eyes peeled on my youtube channel to see the full video!
Can we expect an Album or EP and If so, what can we expect from it?
No album or EP announcements yet, but definitely keep your eyes peeled for a line up of banging singles in the coming months!
Do you have any live shows coming up?
Come catch us for the last of the festival season: playing Come Bye Festival in Wales on the 5th of September, Howay Fest in Newcastle on the 27th of September as well as many more – see my website (www.IndiaArkin.com) for more details and grab your tickets now.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Playing bigger and bigger shows, and touring internationally more frequently..and maybe another album…so excited for everything that’s coming!
When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
