What is your name?
My name is Sonya, but I go artistically by nickname Sone.
What is your genre of music?
I am not exactly sure, I think I would call it something like Popera with jazz and funk influences.
Give us a little bio about you.
I’m Sone, I’m a singer songwriter. I’m originally from New York but I have been living in Germany for the past five years studying Opera in Hamburg. While I am not pursuing being an Opera singer, I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn vocal technique. And through studying in Germany I was able to be exposed to so many different styles of music.
What made you go into music?
I have always sung as a child, and I always loved coming up with songs as a kid. I started performing as a kid and I never really stopped.
Who are your influences?
Noga Erez, Tom Misch, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter… just to name a few.
You released your latest Single ‘Happy’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
I wrote this song when I was in a pretty dark place. I had trouble connecting with people around me and I didn’t trust myself, or others for that matter. But this song is more about how even when you have these moments, life can still be beautiful and we can still be happy. The darkness doest have to overshadow the good moments too. So this song is about letting yourself be happy.
Describe the track in two words.
Relieving, uplifting
What was the writing and recording process like?
When I wrote this song it actually stemmed from a conversation I was having and I genuinely thought to myself, “If I can’t trust myself, how is anybody supposed to trust me?” That sparked a flow of thoughts that formed the lyrics, I didn’t have to think much about the text because it was a flow of consciousness. The melody came with the words. Then I sang it to my producer and we picked a tempo, and basically I sang the entire song to a click track a-capella, and we formed the music around that.
Who did you work with on the single?
I worked with a producer that goes by the name Dock-10. He’s based in Hamburg.
Can we expect a music video and if so tell us more about the making.
Sadly not, but for the next songs I am working on there are going to be some videos.
Can we expect a Album or EP and If so what can we expect form it?
I will be coming out with an EP pretty soon, it’s going to be different from what you’ve heard before. I’m really excited to share it, I think people will connect with the music.
Do you have any live shows coming up?
That is TBA
What else can we expect in 2024?
A lot of more music from me, I am experimenting with new sounds and new ways of writing.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Hopefully I am surrounded by amazing people, and I am working with talented inspiring musicians. I want to be going on tours and sharing my music with the world.
What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. My dad said it all of the time, and I think now I am actually starting to understand what that really means.
When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
My guitar, water, lipstick, hairbrush… gum? If you catch me without gum, assume I am not well. I don’t sing with it in my mouth but I always have gum right before and after I sing. Only thing that chills me out haha.
Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
Yes! My instagram , my TikTok and my YouTube .
