What is your name?
Sarah Wickett
What is your genre of music?
Desi Pop-Country
Give us a little bio about you.
I was born and raised in Beaverton, Ontario. I’ve had a passion for music since I was young. Drawing inspiration from the ups and downs of life, the legendary Shania Twain inspired me to break barriers and pave my own way as a woman in the industry. My musical journey took a surprising turn when I discovered a deep appreciation for Punjabi culture, which led me to create a genre-defying musical blend of Desi Pop-Country. I’ve made history by becoming the first North American country singer to record a bilingual (Punjabi / English) mashup called “Accent” featuring Punjabi artist, Rahul Bains. My music is a genre-defying fusion that reflects the diverse influences that have shaped me as an artist. My latest single, Lemonade, is a perfect example of this fusion, offering a fresh take on country music that is uniquely me.
What made you go into music?
I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember! As a little girl, I would sing in front of the mirror for hours on end. But I was always really shy. To help me break out of my shell, my parents signed me up for vocal lessons. I started competing in talent shows and vocal competitions, and that’s when I realized that I couldn’t live without music. By the time I got to high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in music, and I’ve been living my dream ever since!
Who are your influences?
My influences are diverse and span across many areas of my life. Firstly, I draw a lot of inspiration from my parents, who have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and do what makes me happy. Musically, I’m inspired by artists who break away from convention and dare to be different. Shania Twain and Maren Morris are two of my biggest influences for this reason. Growing up on country music has also influenced me a lot, and now I’m excited to incorporate my love for Punjabi culture into my music. It’s amazing to have such a broad range of influences, and I’m constantly discovering new sources of inspiration that help me grow as an artist.
Are you a signed?
I am an independent artist!
You released your new single ‘Lemonade’, tell us more about the single and the meaning behind the song.
Sure! The track is a refreshing and perfectly blended mix of Pop-Country with hints of Bollywood inspiration. The tabla and banjo are seamlessly intertwined to create sweet harmonies, offering a fresh take on country music that is uniquely me! Just like a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, I sing about finding someone who hits the spot every time, someone who is always a go-to.
Describe the track in two words.
Country Fusion
What was the writing and recording process like?
The writing and recording process was so fun! I wrote this song with Lydia Sutherland and Aaron Pollock. They’re such talented songwriters so I always feel honoured when I get the opportunity to write songs with them… especially ones as fun as Lemonade.
Who did you work with on the single?
The producer I worked with on the single is Dustin Bird. He really understood my vision for the Desi Pop-Country fusion and brought it to life in an amazing way. I’m blown away by his technical skills and the level of involvement he has in my music. We share a common goal for my music and spend a lot of time discussing how we can make it the best it can be. I feel incredibly lucky to have found a producer who’s so invested in the movement I’m trying to create.
Will we see a music video for ‘Lemonade’,, and if so what can we expect from the creative process like?
I have released a visualizer for Lemonade, which I absolutely adore. It is every bit sweet and sour and fun. You can watch it here:
We are planning on releasing an actual music video for Lemonade but it might not be to this version of the song…. Hint hint ;).
Can we expect an EP or Album and if so, what can we expect from it.
Yes, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be releasing my first EP later this year. It’ll feature several fusion songs, including my latest release “Lemonade.” I’m really excited to continue exploring this genre and to collaborate with Punjabi and Bollywood artists. I want to create music that blends the traditional country sound with the vibrant and rhythmic beats of South Asian music, and I think this EP will showcase that perfectly.
Do you have any live shows coming up?
At the moment, I’m really excited to be focusing on my writing, recording and building up my socials. While I don’t have any shows scheduled in the immediate future, I’m always looking for opportunities to share my music with fans and connect with new audiences. In the meantime, I’m hard at work crafting new songs and honing my sound, and I can’t wait to share my latest creations with everyone soon.
What else can we expect in early 2023?
Lots of music & fun content! I plan on releasing more music that reflects my diverse influences and showcases the Desi Pop-Country fusion. I’m always experimenting with new sounds and exploring different genres, so I’m really excited to see where my musical journey takes me. I’m also looking forward to connecting with fans and continuing to break down cultural barriers in the music industry.
