INDIE-POP SINGER-SONGWRITER BORN IN BOSTON TOOK HER MUSICAL JOURNEY TO WALES,UK AND PLAYED IN A BAND THEN WENT TO COLORADO TO CREATE HER BRAND NEW PROJECT ‘MYSTEE’. GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HER HERE!

What is your genre of music?
Indie pop

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up outside of Boston and started playing guitar when I was six years old. Ever since then, I’ve been writing songs and playing in bands. I studied music in college and got a masters in songwriting after. Then I moved to Wales for four years, where I played in a band all across the UK. When Covid ruined that, I moved to Colorado and started Mystee.

What made you go into music?
When I was in preschool, someone’s dad came in and played guitar for us and I was completely mesmerized. When I got home, I begged my parents for a guitar and I finally got one on my sixth birthday. Ever since then, there was no turning back.

Who are your influences?
I try to listen to as many different artists and different genres as I can to inform my songwriting. Of course, my all time favorite has to be the Beatles but more recently, I’ve been into indie artists like Big Thief and Soccer Mommy.

Tell us more about the single and the meaning behind “Hard Candy.”
Hard Candy is a song about unrequited love. I wrote it about a guy I knew who I had a huge crush on but he had a girlfriend. Pretty standard stuff really, but my hope is that the universality of the subject matter makes it a relatable song that will help some people.

Describe the track in two words.
Longing pop

What was the writing and recording process like?
I sat down and wrote this song in one go in my bedroom. It was one of those songs that just came together and basically wrote itself. The recording process was interesting though. One of my bandmates said he had a friend who taught production at a local college and we came in as a live three piece to track the song so the students could practice mixing. The teacher of that class ended up finishing the recording for us and now is actually the band’s lead guitarist.

Who did you work with on the single?
My bandmates and I did it all ourselves. Shout out to Ryan (guitar and production), Josh (drums) and Keaton (bass)!

Will we see a music video for ‘Hard Candy’ and if so, what can we expect from the creative
process?

We don’t currently have plans to make a video for Hard Candy. What we’re working on next is more singles!

Will we see an EP or Album and if so, what tell us more about it.
The plan is to release a few more singles before going for an EP/album. We want to really establish ourselves and our fanbase before overloading everyone.

Do you have any live shows coming up?
We’re playing March 9 at Wolverine Farm Fort Collins, and we’ve got several spring/summer shows in the works!

What else can we expect in early 2023?
Lots of gigging and studio time. We are hoping to release a few more singles this year so we’ll be doing a lot of writing and recording.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
In five years I hope to be touring a lot and teaching songwriting lectures. I want to inspire other women and underrepresented people in the music industry.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Do it scared. I actually have it tattooed on my arm.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
When I’m playing? I’d say my guitar, pedal board, water, what my lyrics are, and the fact that my bandmates have my back!

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
I mainly use Instagram.
