WITH THE RELEASE OF HER NEW FIVE TRACK EP ‘PROMISE YOU’LL STAY LONG ENOUGH TO HEAR THIS’ WE HAD A CHANCE TO CHAT WITH BOSTON’S SINGER-SONGWRITER ‘MONICA WHITLOCK’ TO GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT RIGHT HERE.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a 25y/o singer songwriter from boston!

What made you go into music?
So I’m autistic, and growing up I didn’t know how to express my emotions in a non self destructive way. Songwriting was the only way I could communicate, escape and that cathartic release is something I’m so grateful for. I went from not speaking at all to now, at 25, being known as someone who never stops talking about things I care about and want to change.

Who are your influences?
Modern Baseball, Frank Ocean, Bon Iver, Lauren Weintruab

Are you signed to a label, or self produced?
Independent but have publishing ties currently!

You released your EP ‘Promise Me You’ll Stay Long Enough To Hear This.” Tell us more about the EP and the meaning behind the EP.
There’s a quote I read recently that’s like “children need their emotions to be mirrored in order to know that what they’re feeling is real” and that’s influenced my entire view of my past self.  “This five track EP that serves as a letter to my past self. After dealing with various traumas including suicide attempts— I now, at age 25, am able to reflect back on girl I was and empathize with her. I can hold her hand and show her, that she survived and there’s so much more to this than she knows”

Describe each track in two words.
Parchment Paper: independence, empathy
Anymore: rebrand, driving
Marilyn Monroe: letting go
Jack+Rose: rescued, fixing
March1997: endings, forgiveness

What was the writing and recording process like?
I recorded in July with Shannon McArthur (dashboard confessional, Jesse McCartney etc) in Nashville. I have a 250+ song catalog and these songs made the most sense for me story telling wise. I wanted to showcase my writing ability before anything else and I’m incredibly proud of myself for that.

Who did you work with on the EP?
Shannon McArthur!

Will we see a music video for any of the tracks on the EP? If so, what can we expect from the creative process?
Yes! I’m working on a short Film:)

Will we see any live shows and if so where will fans be able to get tickets?
Yes, plans will be announced soon on www.iammonicawhitlock.com

What can we expect from you for 2023?
Taking over the world

Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?
Being one of the biggest artists ever

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Everything will be ok in the end and if it’s not ok it’s not the end !

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Live in the space, connect with the audience, make memories, get people to hear you before you speak, remain authentic
