What is your name?
Cindy Sterling
What is your genre of music?
Indie-Pop/Pop/Pop & RnB
Give us a little bio about you.
I was born & raised in Los Angeles, CA to 2 immigrant parents who met here in Highschool and had a very toxic relationship. My upbringing was not very typical or ordinary and I definitely struggled with a lot growing up, as I’m sure my brother did. My mental health was not doing well and I spent more time in therapy & counseling appointments than classes, to deal with a lot of my home life adolescent problems, although it wasn’t easy for me to talk about things. I guess that’s where my communication through music really grew because through music I didn’t have to talk about anything to anyone I just resonated with lyrics & always wanted to do the same with others eventually through music of my own.
What made you go into music?
When I think about it, I think I’ve always walked around with this feeling of wanting to be an accomplished artist. It’s something that always ate up the subconscious thoughts in the back of my mind. When I was having fun somewhere the thought of going to work on music or my future took over most of my thoughts where I don’t think I’ve enjoyed events the same way as others do. I always felt I needed to leave to be productive and work on music or I was failing or not living my life’s purpose. I’ve always been drawn to music, guitar, singing, piano, writing and overall developed stronger romantic relationships with boys in music. I think it’s something that I just absolutely need to be surrounded by and is my life’s purpose.
Who are your influences?
I think my biggest influences are my life & my friends or events that are happening in my life or impacted me in the past and left a mark whether it be good or bad – rather than any particular artist.
I’m not interested in sounding like any artist.
Are you signed?
No I am not, unsure if I would want to be or remain independent and have freedom with my music. I don’t know too much about labels at this point in my career but I do know that at the moment I’m just enjoying vibing out to creating and just now releasing new music & figuring out what I enjoy making and vibe with the most. I’m in a place of unlimited expression right now that a label isn’t at the forefront of my mind.
You are set to release your single ‘Kids Back Then’, tell us more about the single.
The single is about someone I unofficially dated and having a flashback of moments with them while passing by his dad’s hotel in Beverly Hills/Brentwood here in LA & realizing that I missed a lot of components of that person or perhaps the way they made me feel – even though I don’t want to be with them in that capacity – it made me realize I was missing a lot of things or characteristics that person had and I bottled that emotion into a song. So the song should evoke a sense of nostalgia, longing and the feelings of missing someone who’s no longer a part of your life but the feelings still exist in this realm as a memory.
Describe the track in two words.
Heartfelt & Reminiscent.
What was the writing and recording process like?
I wrote the whole album practically in 2 days, I was just hit with a wave of inspiration and couldn’t stop writing and recording it from home and knew I immediately needed to hit a studio and turn it into something before I didn’t follow up with it, but the passion to record this album was too strong I really really wanted to. I wrote the first 3 songs in 1 day & the next few the 2nd day. Then I went into a whirlwind of thinking about my life and moving closer to my recording studio and uprooting my whole life so that I could focus more on music & the project ahead of me.
Who did you work with on the single?
Zachary Dowd “Dowzy” my engineer. He recorded me and helped me become more comfortable in the process with my music and recording around people. Other than that, I wrote the whole album by myself.
Will we see a music video for ‘Kids Back Then’ and if so what can we expect from the creative process?
Yes. This will be my first music video ever. I’m excited about how well it covers the storyline but also very scared and nervous, but i’m not allowing myself to fully feel that way or judge myself because I know all I can do is move forward and only do better and bigger from here – however this is a really important piece of work/art for me because I wrote & directed it + styled it and I’m excited to have that out in the universe because it also perfectly depicts the storyline of this song.
Will we see an EP or Album and if so, what can we expect from it?
Yes. This single sparked a series of emotions and realizations that make up the rest of the tracks for my album “Roxbury Romance” which touches on 2 romantic relationships in my life with these 2 muses/characters/ people in my life and feeling all of the emotions they gave me, taught me, made me face, from good and magical to bad, dark & deep.
What else can we expect in 2022?
I plan to release a lot more music. Different genres are to be expected, collaborations with other artists, more back to back single releases as much as I can while I explore my artistry and at least 3 albums 2022 & 2023. We’re just getting started & I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
In 5 years I see myself still making music, getting back into acting, painting a lot, with my dog running around the house, with hopefully the love of my life or something beautiful and romantic to come home to where I am surrounded by art and music. I hope I’ll be able to take time off from music and vacation and travel and be a normal human more because right now I’m so in the zone with music that I don’t want to take a break to the point where I barely enjoy eating since I just want to keep working on music and progressing with my career. I hope my life will be peaceful and full of life and love and family – and my music and art will reflect that version of me as I grow and change too. Truly, Hopefully in Europe part-time & in the U.S. part time back home in LA around my family. That would be my dream!
What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Make Your Own Luck.
I grew up with a large culture of skating around me and skaters/surfers. Rob Dyrdek is someone who obviously is incredible and created his own company/ skate brand/reality show/etc all super young and maintained a very fun, wholesome, humble personality. One of his quotes he’s always said was “Make Your Own Luck” and that quote has always shaped my life because it helps me to remember that the harder I work the luckier I will get and it’s nice to remember that your dreams don’t work unless you do.
It’s a powerful and OPTIMISTIC quote that makes you believe in the future & yourself.
When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
I still haven’t performed yet.
I wonder what that side of me will be like because I do not know her yet..
