TORONTO BASED SINGER – SONGWRITER ‘JASON MAXWELL’ IS A COUNTRY/COUNTRY-POP ARTIST WHO HAS RELEASED HIS BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘FOR NOW’ AND I HAD A CHANCE TO HAVE A CHAT WITH JASON ALL ABOUT IT AND MORE. YOU CAN READ THE FULL CHAT HERE.

What is your name?
Jason Maxwell

What is your genre of music?
Country/Pop-Country

Give us a little bio about you.
I’m a singer-songwriter and Country recording artist from Toronto, ON. I record out of Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN and I’d describe my music as Josh Kerr’s songwriting meets Mitchell Tenpenny’s production.

What made you go into music?
My journey into music was heavily influenced by the movie “School of Rock”. Immediately after watching the movie, I wanted to play the drums and guitar but my parents weren’t too thrilled with the idea of hearing drums banging and crashing throughout the house so we mutually settled on guitar.

Who are your influences?
Josh Kerr, Mitchell Tenpenny, Russ

Are you signed?
I’m not signed in the conventional manner. I work with a management group and a major distribution company but both of those arrangements are individually contracted as needed – I’m not locked into an over-arching deal.

You released your new single ‘For Now’, tell us more about the single.
The song was inspired by a past relationship that ultimately failed – very much a case of ‘right girl, wrong time’. A year or so after our relationship ended, I noticed she had moved on to someone new and my initial reaction was to immediately question whether her new relationship was as serious or meaningful as her previous relationship with myself.

What is the meaning behind the single?
In a way it’s the first vulnerable self-depiction of how I truly felt about us drifting apart and her finding someone to replace me with. “For Now” is my honest attempt at expressing my innermost thoughts, feelings and emotions straight from the heart to pen to page to studio recording. Essentially the song revolves around telling my ex-girlfriend that she can do far better than her new partner that she replaced me with and the song concludes with me revealing that I feel like I’m a better match for her.

What was the writing and recording process like?
It was a challenging process writing “For Now” – the challenging aspect was the unnerving awkwardness of opening up to my co-writers Elias Edlund and Shawn Moore on a subject that still stings and communicating the story in such a manner that’s more negative/ toxic than it is positive/happy with respect to emotional health. Overall the process definitely varies in the sense that there’s no strictly regimented approach. Sometimes I’ll have an idea or a specific lyrical phrase I want to build the song around – other times I’ll have writer’s block content-wise and instead I’ll work out a vocal or instrumental lead melody to build the track’s feel and groove around. For me, there’s no such thing as a words-first, music-second or vice-versa – I find I write and produce my best songs when I find the type of sonic energy that genuinely and passionately resonates. Once I find that space, I always try to build the entire soundscape around that core foundational feeling that ultimately gives the song its life.

Describe the track in two words.
Lively. Heartfelt.

Who did you work with on the single?
The single was mixed, engineered and produced by Shawn Moore. Guitars by Stu Weinberg, bass by Seth Bolte, keys by Brandon Fehderau and drums by Tim Buell. Recorded at the world renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN.

I’ll be performing in Pickering on August 11th and I’ll be back performing in Alliston this September/October.

What else can we expect in 2022?
A return to releasing tons of singles as well as an Album release supported by live shows!

Will we see any collaborations and if so, can you tell us more about them?
A couple collaborations are in the works but one collaboration I can reveal is a live show partnership with Jonny Lee. Our first dual show in Alliston was very successful so we’re hoping to keep that trend going with future dual performances.
