WE HAD A CHANCE TO CHAT WITH ‘BUBBLEGUM EMO’ TRIO ‘TRIBE FRIDAY’ WHO DEFINES THEIR SOUND TO US, CHATS NEW MUSIC AND WHAT ELSE IS TO COME. READ OUR FULL CHAT HERE AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE FOLLOWING.

What are your names?
Hi! Our names are Noah, Robin and Isak. Noah sings and plays the guitar, Robin is our resident bass virtuoso, and Isak plays lead guitar on most tracks.

What is the band’s name?
Tribe Friday!

How did you come up with the band’s name? What is your genre of music?
Honestly – band name generator. We’ve tried to come up with a better explanation, but that’s the honest truth. We like to call our genre “bubblegum emo”, which is a mixture of indie rock, pop, and emo sounds.

Give us a little bio about you.
Noah: Sure! I started this project as an after-school thing when I was growing up in the north of Sweden. I lived in a pretty small town and a lot of my identity revolved around music communities, so starting a band felt like the natural thing to do.

Isak: Robin and I joined in late 2019 after meeting Noah at shows and parties around the Swedish indie scene.

What made you go into music?
Noah: We were all emo kids who took comfort in music growing up, so I think that’s a big part of it. We looked up to our heroes and wanted to do what they did. It’s always felt more like a compulsion than a choice, to be honest.

Who are your influences?
Oh we have so many – but the big common denominators would be My Chemical Romance and The Strokes. Hence the mix of emo and indie rock sounds!

Are you signed?.
.-ish. We have people we work with, but we own all our own music and choose our partners very wisely. It’s nice to be able to assemble your own team!

You released your debut album ‘bubblegum emo’, tell us more about the album.
Sure! It consists of 10 tracks that we wrote over a period of two weeks at the top of the pandemic. We were fresh back from touring the US and Germany, and suddenly found ourselves locked in our house in the woods with lots of new experiences to draw from. The whole thing poured out of us really quickly.

What is the meaning behind the album?
We like to call it a “growing pains”-record. It’s about a lot of the things you have to go through in order to grow and become a fully-fledged human.

What was the writing and recording process like?
The writing process was quick and a lot of fun. It mostly consisted of kitchen table jams and late nights in our garage rehearsal space. Recording, on the other hand, was very slow and tedious. Noah was in the studio for about a year tracking and re-tracking stuff, progressively growing more insane by the minute. We’re really proud of the result though, so it was worth it.

Describe each track in two words.
forward is the way out: Nihilism, anti-inspirational
shut me up: Groovy, lovesick
sugar: Addiction, riffs
for real?: Self-doubt, anxiety
conversation: Anger, frustration
there she goes: Apathy, breakup
figure it out: Punk rock
don’t wanna know: Borderline jealousy
stay inside: Melancholy, rainclouds
dead: Depression anthem

Who did you work with on the album?I
It’s entirely self-produced, self-written, and self-recorded. Our good friend Magnus Pejlert mixed most of the tracks, except for “shut me up” which was mixed by Joe Zook (The Hives, One Direction, Weezer). Stephen Marcussen (The Strokes, Modest Mouse, The Rolling Stones) mastered the whole thing.

Do you have any live shows or a tour coming up and if so let us know where we can catch you at?
We’re playing quite a few shows in Sweden and Germany this summer and fall! All our upcoming shows can be found on our website (tribefriday.com) and social media accounts.

What else can we expect in 2022?
More music, probably. We have so many ideas to share with the world..

Will we see any collaborations and if so, can you tell us more about them?
Possibly, yes! We have a few writing sessions scheduled with some heroes of ours. I won’t say more than that at the moment.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Robin: Playing MSG for the 5th time, haha!
Noah: Doing what we do best, and doing it for more people.
Isak: Performing at the Swedish royal wedding.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“It’ll work itself out”.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Isak: Strings, pens for signing stuff, eyeliner, orange juice and credit cards.
Robin: My bass, pedal board, eyeliner, merch and ear buds!
Noah: Nasal spray (don’t ask), my favorite skirt, a backup guitar in case I break a string, a good night’s sleep and comfy shoes.

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?

Yes! We’re on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat. @tribefriday, always. We also have a community Discord server.
