SHAPING SOUND IS APART OF THE WRITING PROCESS WHICH MAKES IT EASY FOR ‘MATILDE DAVOLI’ TO NOT ALWAYS PUT A GENRE ON HER SOUND. GETTING SOME OF HER MUSIC INFLUENCE FROM HER DADS RECORD COLLECTION WE GOT A CHANCE TO DIG A LITTLE DEEP AND TALK ABOUT HER NEW SINGLE ‘GLITCHAT DARK’ AND MORE. GIVE IT A READ HEAR.

No description available.

What is your name?
Matilde Davoli

What is your genre of music?
Shaping the sound is part of my writing process, especially as a sound engineer and producer. It is a continuous research of atmospheres and ways to amaze and keep the attention high. I try to push the listener into a limbo made of smoky sensations, in an attempt to let his imagination run. It’s very difficult to give the above a name, a genre. I could say dream pop… but it’s definitely not just that.

Give us a little bio about you.
It all begins with my father, a Hi-Fi sound fanatic with a huge collection of records and these weird, big stereo systems at home. I spent many long afternoons listening to music with him. At a certain point me and my older brother started learning to play the guitar and piano hanging around in our home. This is how Studiodavoli (my first band) came to life. Since then I had many other music projects, until eventually I studied sound engineering and started my solo project, which brings us here.

What made you go into music?
I do music since I was a kid. I never thought about it, it was natural. I felt it like it was the right thing to do because I was always good at it and it always made me felt good. I just followed my instinct.

Who are your influences?
There’s many,Stereolab, Air, Feist, Broken Social Scene, Miles Davis, Bon Iver, but Son Lux “Brighter Wounds” has probably been the most important influence when I wrote “Home”. It’s an incredible album, with many touching moments, great sound and progressions. The drumming is majestic, Ian Chang is my most favorite musician right now. The record is both big and intimate, pop and experimental at the same time. A Perfect balance.

Are you signed?
I I have with my husband my own label “Loyal To Your Dreams”, all my music is released through it.

You released your new single ‘Glitch At Dark’, tell us more about the single.
I was in London on holiday. It was raining like hell outside, super windy and clouds covered everything, no light in the sky. I was stuck in the hotel, but of course I had with me my laptop and a mini keyboard. So I did the most obvious thing: some music! I still remember how I felt that afternoon, like being inside the darkest of nights, my thoughts were smoky and heavy and almost trippy, like a half-awake dream state. It was somehow cathartic

What is the meaning behind the single?
As I said before, it was a cathartic moment. I’m always focusing my attention on emotions, so I almost never talk about the events as much, but rather about the feelings. Everybody has emotions to connect to: sadness, anger, love, hope… we need to understand them, tame them, sometimes fix them in our heart and mind to better understand ourselves and others.

What was the writing and recording process like?
I recorded and mixed everything in my room in Lecce (Italy), by myself. The only exception being a few drums, a collaboration with one of my friends Gigi Chords in “Il Coraggio Di Provare”, Emanuele Coluccia’s sax and the final mastering, done in the studio, Sudestudio, a magic place in Italy with which I constantly work and collaborate as engineer and producer. Still, I can definitely say this is a home recording project under any aspect

Describe the track in two words.
It’s a Glitch At Dark 🙂

Who did you work with on the single?
No one.
Imagine it like a solo jam session, many sessions in fact, with drums, synths, bass, guitar…

Will we see a Music video for ‘Glitch At Dark’ and if so, what can we expect from it?
“Glitch At Dark” video in on Loyal To Your Dreams Youtube channel and it was directed by David Chambriard a great french film director and editor. It a piece of art for me. Here’s his little description about the video: “Beating digital glitchy corals grow softly. Their waves create a lost choreography in a dark scenery drawing the shape of a woman dancing in an aquatic ballet. The live matter around her becomes a protective shell in this space where the night wakes up old devils.”

Do you have any live shows or a tour coming up and if so let us know where we can catch you at?
My new record is finally out, so the next step is to bring this record to as many people as I can. It will be my mission!.
Initially it will be more easily make the shows in Italy of course, but… who never knows, fingers crossed and get away COVID! 🙂
