AMERICANA – FOLK POP DUO PAOLA AND OLLI MAKE UP ‘LONE DEER LAREDO’ WHO BOTH MET IN A BAR IN ‘HELSINKI TO SHARING THEIR LOVE FOR MUSIC TO RELEASING THEIR VERY OWN MATERIAL. I GOT A CHANCE TO CHAT ABOUT THEIR LATEST RELEASE ‘FEVER FEVER’. READ THE CHAT BELOW.

What are your names?
Paola Suhonen and Olli Happonen

What is the band’s name?
Lone Deer Laredo

How did you come up with the band’s name?
Here’s some etymology of it: Paola’s father had jeans factory in Finland that was producing Laredo labeled jeans. The name of the town Laredo also fits with our musical influences that mostly come from americana and folk. We also wanted to have some universal good into our band’s name so we ended up adding ”Lone Deer” to it. We love animals.

What is your genre of music?
Americana, folk, pop with a little slavic and nordic twist and melancholy.

Give us a little bio about you as a band.
The members of our duo Paola and Olli met in 2016 in a hazy bar in Helsinki. Already during this first encounter the band was formed. The songs just kept appearing and finally in 2018 we travelled to Nashville and recorded the debut lp with the producer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Hayes Carll, Dolly Parton). It was the beginning for the seven album saga Lone Deer Laredo vol. 1-7.
The second LP will be out on February 2022. It was also recorded with Brad in Nashville.

What made you go into music?
Paola used to play violin and sing in a school choir and one day wanted to create her own songs. Olli found the music of Lou Reed somewhere around his late teens and had no choice after that

Are you signed?
We have our own indie label called Ivana Helsinki Records.

You released your new single ‘Fever Fever’, tell us more about the single.
It is the first taste of the forthcoming Lone Deer Laredo vol. 2/7 LP. It is a mixture of Americana and pop and has probably the biggest chorus we have had so far

What is the meaning behind the single?
It is a love song about betrayal and disappointment, and has this age old idea of ”talk the talk, walk the walk” in a more poetic form of pop.

Describe the track in two words.
Road Romanticism

Who did you work with on the single?
Allstar Nashville musicians: Brad Jones as a producer and on bass guitar, Chris Carmichael on strings, Jason Cheek on drums, Carey Kotsionis on backing vocals, Dan Cohen on electric guitar…

Will we see a Music Video for the single and if so what can we expect from it?
Yeah absolutely. It has been shot on 16mm film inside of an old mansion in southern part of Finland. Hauntingly beautiful place that has a lot of history in it.

Will we see an EP or Album and if so what can we expect from it.
Album of 9 songs that present the best of us. Really the best of us.

What else can we expect in 2021?
A lot of gigs and new song writing.
