JAMMING AT SCHOOL TO TAKING THE STAGES AT THEIR LOCAL VENUES IN NOTTINGHAM AND BEYOND. I GOT A CHANCE TO HAVE A CHAT WITH ‘DISTANT BLUE’ ABOUT HOW THEY MET, NEW SINGLE AND MORE. READ IT HERE!

What are your names?
Peter, Ed, Jack and Kieran

What is the band’s name?
We are called Distant Blue

How did you come up with the band’s name?
Our friend came up with it when we were still in school. At the time we were looking for a new band name, we thought of a few names but they just didn’t click. One day she comes up to us and says ‘why don’t you call it Distant Blue?’ as soon as she said that our minds were already made up and we decided to stick with that name.

What is your genre of music?
It’s on the rock spectrum, but we take aspects spanning all genres such as Hip Hop, Metal, Soul, Blues and some trap, mainly emo trap. We are constantly changing and adapting our sound with our ever-evolving taste.

Give us a little bio about you as a band.
Hello, we are the band from Nottingham who had a circle pit in a coffee shop. That may have been a few years ago but we’ve only come on and grown since as a band providing you with a bigger and better live show every time. Some say, our records aren’t bad either.

What made you go in to music?
We just started jamming at school every single day we’d go into the practice room at lunch, not even bothering with getting food. We would go into the practice room and start jamming out some covers. Eventually, when we got good enough we started to do small shows in our hometown. Music has always been involved in our lives one way or another. It was meant to be. We believe its going to happen which is more than most people in this industry; which is also what will carry us the distance.

Are you a signed?
No, everything we do, everything you see, all the posts and videos, all the promo that is all DIY. We have great support from our fans, friends and family and without that, we wouldn’t got as far as we have.

You have released your new single ‘The Ghost Of My Empty Glass’, tell us more about the single.
It’s a new direction for our sound; poppy and funky but with our heavy roots dug deep into the soul of the song.

What is the meaning behind the single?
“Lyrically the song encapsulates night life in Nottingham, mainly through one experience of my own, and one particular night to be specific. It tells a story of dancing and drinking but also of trying to stand out, and the anger and frustration felt when the night isn’t going your way.” Coming out of 2020 this track has been in the works for a while, and it’s release will hopefully see us back into the busy industry that has been side-lined for so many months.

Describe the track in two words.
WHAT THE?

What was the writing process like?
It started from Ed showing us the guitar riff he wrote which was basically the building ground for the song. Once we knew the riff we all started to jam and groove to it, essentially building the song part by part and alternating certain bits for greater sound.

What was the recording process like?
We spent 3 days at the studio recording this track long side ‘whatever makes you feel safe’. First Peter laid down the drums then Jack tracked the bass, on day 2 it was all Ed and Kieran’s guitars and day 3 was all vocals + tweaking everything.

Who did you work with on the single?
Our friend and producer Tristan Hill at 7Hz studio.

Will we see a music video for the tracks?
Historically we’ve been pretty ruthless with music videos, however we have a lot of cool ideas for the upcoming tracks.

Will we see an EP or Album and if so, what can we expect?#
We don’t want to reveal to much but we are in the middle of recording new tracks. Don’t get to comfortable, it’s about to get dreamy.

Do you have any online shows coming up?
We don’t have any in the works yet, but we want and will most likely get round to doing some as soon as possible.

What else can we expect in 2020?
You can expect a live acoustic session and we are going to do a gaming stream on twitch at some point where you can ask us questions.
You can expect a live acoustic session and we are going to do a gaming stream on twitch at some point where you can ask us questions.

Do you have any collaborations coming up with any up coming artists?
We don’t want to reveal too much but…we have collabed with one of our really good friends. Our fans will know who we are talking about.

Would you be up for collaborations if other musicians wanted one with you? and who would they have to contact?
We are always keen to work with other artists. If we like your music, your sound, your vibe then we’d be more than down for a collab! For collabs email us at distantblueinfo@gmail.com

Do you play any instruments?
Peter plays the drums and does backing vocals also produces music. Ed is the vocalist in the band who plays guitar and dabbles in keys, bass, drums basically an all-rounder. Kieran plays the guitar and is also a proficient bass player. Jack plays the bass and is also very talented on piano, trumpet and other curveball instruments.

Who are your influences?
Bring Me The Horizon, Alice In Chains, Neck Deep, Rage Against The Machine, James Brown, David Bowie, Post Malone, Outkast, The Black Keys. This is a small window into our combined taste.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?
Writing a song or lyrics comes in many ways. Sometimes you’ll be in your bed about to fall asleep at 4am and then you get a spark of an idea, or you watch a film and take inspiration from that. It’s spontaneous.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Headlining the main stage at Reading & Leeds and being the #1 band

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?
We either chill at home, work or see the girlfriends. However, there’s always music happening one way or another. We are always grafting.

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more into the music scene?
Its different for all of us but the main ones that get us pumped are Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones, House Of Wolves by Bring Me The Horizon, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden and Still The D.R.E. Motherfuckers.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Always look out for number 1. Get your head in the game, work hard and don’t give up.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?
Great things take time, everyone has a different workflow so don’t stress if you hear someone say they made a song in an hour when it took you 2 days to do it. Its not about how quick its about how good a track sounds.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
We have a few like ‘Fuck it’, ‘What songs next?’ and ‘Has anyone got a guitar pick’.

Where in your hometown is a must go to visit?

If you’re in Nottingham and are thinking of going somewhere for a drink or food then go to either Pit & Pendulum or MOJO. But we all know Rescue Room and Stealth is the best club-night.

Your coming off tour;
1/ Where do you go first?
Go home and get in bed
2/ Who do you see first? The madre. Stop her worrying.
3/What do you eat first? A huge dominos pizza, cookies, potato wedges and Ben & Jerrys ice cream.
A massive kebab.
And a pint of a Guinness for jack.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
The words, jack leads, Peter, guitar pics and Peter cause when he’s not there we are f**ked
