What is your names?
Mercy, Sunil, Holly and Annie
What is your genre of music?
Mercy: I call it “Sugar Rock”
Give us a little bio about you.
Mercy: I started writing my solo material in 2010. It seemed natural to form a band to perform the songs live as the nature of the material leant itself specifically to a rock band format. I had previously worked with Holly and knew her to be a fantastic drummer with a lot of experience. Sunil and Annie joined later having been recommended by other musicians in our circle. We’ve played London gigs including Proud, 100 Club and 229. We’re about to release our debut album Forever on most streaming platforms.
What made you go into music?
Mercy: It was something that came naturally. I was singing and recording original songs on my toy radio when I was 5. Being able to hear myself back was a revelation . I was fortunate enough to have piano, vocal and guitar lessons from a young age and in adulthood, study popular music performance and audio engineering. I love performing my music for people, especially when they tell me that the song means something to them. Song writing is an emotional release which I have found an indispensable tool in dealing with all the shit life throws at us sometimes. It is an important outlet for people of any age to indulge in.
Are you a signed?
We are about as indie as it gets. The recording process began while I was studying audio engineering and had unlimited access to professional standard equipment. Mixing was completed at my husbands old flat. We have since established our own recording studio where we continue to produce music, which we release under our own label, Human Music.
You are set to release your debut album ‘Forever’, tell us more about the album.
This is a collection of songs about the aspirational need to be more than we are. A distillation of all the frustrations, anxieties and achievements that have encompassed my life for the past few year.
Describe each track in two words.
Introduction: wedding song
Heart of stone: reigning queen
Cut it out: adios amigos
A little more time: fucked world
Damage: Is Done
Gabriel: lovers lament
Forever: reign again
Revenge: bloody mess
What else can we expect in Early 2021?
Mercy: Obviously Covid has messed a lot of plans up for everyone. We’d like to release more music videos and put together some live streams. There’s plans for a follow up EP later in the year.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
Mercy: Hopefully, producing music for a diverse roster of clients at SOL Studio whilst continuing to embrace all that family life has to offer. Also, if the world is back on track, playing regular gigs and festivals.
What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Mercy: This one by Marilyn Monroe always resonates with me – “I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”
When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Mercy: picks, pedals, guitar strap, spare guitar, makeup/outfit
Sunil: Guitar/ 2nd guitar, Batteries! Guitar strap! extra cables, spare guitar strings
Holly: My breakables! (Or my kit!), Beer money, Makeup, Snacks, DEODORANT (no one wants a stinky drummer)
