A BRAND NEW RELEASE ‘ MAI’S SONG’ WHICH IS SET TO DROP ON THE 19TH APRIL AND I CHAT WITH THE ARTIST ALL ABOUT IT! CHECK OUT MINE AND RIPL’S CHAT RIGHT HERE!

What is your name?

Hi, I’m RIPL. How are you today?

MOTF:

Hey, we are good!

Give us a little bio about you.

I’m a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Germany. After being the first German musician to record at the infamous Abbey Road studios, I moved to Scotland five years ago. Since then I’ve had the honour to work alongside Brit Award-winning producers such as David Whitmey (Callum Beattie), Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, The Libertines) and Adrian Hall (Black Eyed Peas, Robbie Williams) on my previous singles ‘EMA’ and ‘Of Course I Can’, which I’m incredibly proud of, given that I’m an independent artist from another country without a label etc.

You have a new single ‘Mai’s Song’ set to drop, tell us more about the single. What is the meaning behind the single?

Mai’s song is my third single and it’s dedicated to my beautiful girlfriend.

What was the recording process like?

We went to a studio in West London to record the track, but the airline broke my guitar, so we had to buy a new one at the last minute.

Will we see a music video?

Yes, of course. Every single one of my tunes comes with a brand new music video, as I really enjoy working together with other artists on videos and cover artworks. As this song is dedicated to my girlfriend, the idea behind the video was to squeeze in all her favourite artists. Frustratingly, Adele and Paul McCartney have stopped answering my emails, so the director and I decided that I would simply become these incredible artists in the video. Check it out if you want to see your favourite beard all dressed up as Ed Sheeran.

Do you have any shows coming up or a tour in planning?

This spring I’ll go on my first ever UK tour. The tour kicks off in the north of Scotland and I’ll work my way all the way down to London with stops in both Scotland and England. I literally cannot wait to go on stage right now.

What else can we expect in 2019?

Phew, 2019 is going to be incredibly busy. The American punk gods ‘Bad Advice’ and I are about to hit the studio for a new collaboration. Also, there’s a cover that I’ve recorded in memory of legendary ‘Frightened Rabbit’ singer Scott Hutchison, as he has been a huge influence to me personally, as well as to my music. And, last but not least, my former band ‘The Shme()gma’ , with whom I recorded in Abbey Road, will celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a one off reunion show in Berlin at the end of the year. You see, it’s quite a year ahead;-)

What was the song you listened to before recording Mai’s Song?

I drew a lot of inspiration from the last Lumineers record ‘Cleopatra’. Especially the track ‘Ophelia’ – it was the sort of musical landscape I aimed for when recording Mai’s Song. The clear, straightforward drum patterns of DMA’s ‘For Now’ were also a big influence.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

Touring with Liam Gallagher’s former band ‘Beady Eye’, our kid told me that if I haven’t lost my voice after a show, then I can be sure that my performance was utter shit. That drastically changed my approach to playing live shows – after that I got into all this playing unplugged in the middle of the audience, and smashing guitars on stage.
