ARE YOU READY FOR SOME ELECTRO-POP/PUNK WITH A HINT OF NEW WAVE ? ‘THE MAGNETTES’ ARE A TRIO FROM SWEDEN AND HERE TO SHOWCASE THEIR SOUND TO THE WORLD ESPECIALLY WITH NEW TRACK ‘ KIM’N’KANYE’ FT YOUNG ASH!

What are your names?
Rebecka Digervall
Sanna Kalla
Tomas Bäcklund Tuneström

How did you come up with the band name?
It’s kind of sad. Pajala had a magnetite mine and pretty much everybody in our hometown lost their job when it failed. The Magnettes sounded like a 60’s girl group so we went with that.

How would you describe your genre of music?
21st century fuck-pop, basically a mix between electronic pop, new wave and riot grrrl punk.

What made you go in to music?
Boredom, hubris and a lack of self-awareness and lucrative talents. Most days we wish we were good at something else, but nope. You’re stuck with us.

Your brand new single ‘ KIMKANYE’ ,is out, tell us more about it.
It’s a Saturday night song, a fucked-up disco track about taking on the world with your best friend.
It’s not really about Kim and Kanye, it’s more about that closeness in the middle of a bizarre fucking life. Everybody’s fake and it’s exhausting, but sometimes you just need to play along and dance a little. It’s also about being broke as shit. It’s our first song with a rap feature. She’s called Young Ash and she’s insane!

What was the recording process like?
Most of the track was recorded and then re-recorded at home. It went through two versions, but most of the drums, strings, synths and guitars are from that very first demo. Some of the guitars were recorded at BD Pop Studios in Luleå, and we eventually cut the final vocals at MG Studio, while Young Ash recorded her rap in NY. We didn’t really meet her until we shot the video in Luleå, Sweden.

Describe the track in a few words.
Gritty, ballsy disco soup.

You are also set to go on some upcoming shows, where will you be heading?
We’re touring Europe and India this spring, followed by a Canadian stint, then some Swedish summer festivals before we head back into Europe in the fall.

Where can tickets be bought for your shows?
We have no idea, we’ve never had to buy them. Probably different places.

Will you have support at your shows?
Yeah, we’re sharing the bill at some places with different bands like Access Icarus, VÖS, Micky Blue.

Do you play any instruments?
Rebecka plays guitar, bass and some keyboards, Sanna plays guitar and drums. Tomas plays guitars, keyboards, drum pads and does the programming.

Who are your influences?
Kathleen Hanna, Lady Gaga, Talking Heads

How do you get inspiration to write songs?
We basically sit down with the intention to make music and usually something comes out of it. Sometimes it’s shit, sometimes it’s the next single. We just try to give ourselves the opportunity to make something, and then usually whatever part of the brain we use to write kicks in. Soundwise, right now we’re really into film music, orchestral stuff, and kraut.

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?
Procrastinate, binge-watch, sleep, work

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more in to the music scene?
”Tornedalens Travolta” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPs4RAWlXoU
But we were always headed for the music scene, it’s all we’ve ever done.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Explore the fucking box before you think outside of it. That forces you to explore more aspects of your initial idea. Also, give yourself the conditions you need to succeed. Like if you need time, make time etc.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?
Don’t be afraid and fake it til you make it

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Less is not more. More is more. (Yngwie Malmsteen)

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
Power converters, make up, chains, Doc Martens and a phone charger. Instruments are good too.
