A POP/EDM GENRE, ONE MEMBER FROM LONDON AND THE OTHER FROM THE US, INTRODUCING DUO ‘GRAVITY CASTLE’, WE CHAT THEIR NEW MUSIC, SHOWS AND SHARES THEIR ADVICE ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!

What are your names? Oliver Kersey Gabriel Gledhill What is the band name? Gravity Castle How did you come up with the band name? We wanted something that really explained our musical approach in two words; two nouns that could help one identify our music without even listening to it. The ‘gravity’ represents the ever nagging pull of negativity from the world, while ‘castle’ represents a safe place or fortress. We hope to create this atmosphere for people with our music – especially at our shows. What is your genre of music? Electronic/Pop/EDM – you decide! Give us a little bio about you as a band and as individuals. Oli is originally from London, Gabe from Utah, USA. The two met while Oli and Gabe were at University in Provo, UT. Years after meeting the two synced up in a 4 piece band before separating to start ‘Gravity Castle’ in 2018. As a vocalist, Oli comes from a theatre family and has played the guitar for many years – he’s been in and out of the studio for over a decade. Gabe was a classically trained multi-instrumentalist; violin, guitar, piano… you name it, he can play it! After a tiresome few years of various projects, the two converted Oli’s home garage into a professional studio and recorded their debut EP Album with the launch of Gravity Castle. Oli and his wife have two boys. Gabe got married just last year. What made you go in to music? While initially it was the gratification of following other influential artists in playing their tracks, the actual decision to start recording, producing, and performing our own original music came around during college. As was as if lightning struck – the realization of our songwriting and approach to the industry. If you wanna talk inspirations and perhaps why we first picked up an instrument, the culprit behind those decisions were a mixup of Coldplay, John Mayer, Onerepulic, and much more. Are you a signed? We are not signed. Your brand new single ‘I’ll Just Be Me’ ,is set to release, tell us more about it. The track is very ‘in your face’ ha. It’s got a very memorable melody and an even more identifiable hook. It’s something that anyone, in any walk of life can relate to. To be frank, that’s where we are as a society; a bit of an identity crisis. People are fighting to be heard and this Single is solely about simplifying the ‘me’ in each of us. What was the recording process like? For this track, it was definitely a process. We were experimenting pretty aggressively with different sounds and concepts. The result was this soup of synths, samples, and licks that really bring a ‘pop’ genre feel to an otherwise electronic track. It makes an initial indie track, a top 40 candidate. What was the writing process like? Once the hook was agreed on, the remainder of the song came together very quickly. We were shooting for a basic verse/pre-chorus/chorus structure. The first few demos that we put together were very indie but we managed the steer the track back to more of a top 40 vibe. Describe the track in two words Identifiable Obnoxious 🙂 Listen to I’ll Just Be Me Where will it be to buy/listen? Streaming and available on all music platforms. Who did you work on with the single? Just us both Will we see an EP or Album this year? Absolutely! If so what can we expect from it? We released our debut EP Q4 of last year. We are shooting a full LP Album this year for sure. How many tracks that will have hasn’t been determined yet. Will we see any shows or a tour in planning? We did a lot of shows with our previous band prior to Gravity Castle. With project, it’s all been about getting our first few tracks out. We are looking to shoot for some shows Q2/Q3 of this year. If so where will you be heading? USA West coast. What else can we expect in 2019? A lot more shows!! Hopefully some international – depending how our growth looks! More music… much more music. Do you play any instruments? Yes between us we play the guitar, bass, violin, keys, viola, mandolin, ukulele, and cello. Who are your influences? Coldplay,Onerepublic,John Mayer,Adele,Matt Kearney And much more… How do you get inspiration to write songs? It’s always so unpredictable. There’s no shortage of topics, but inspiration will also come in some random moment (annoyingly, a lot when I’m about dozing off and some stellar riff enters my head…) That said, we will say that a song is only as good as its story. Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years? Full-time musicians. We have families to provide for and food to put on the table so naturally we both have day jobs. That said music is our passion and we’d love to expand our production studio and take things full time with Gravity Castle. When you’re not doing music, what do you do? Utah is an incredible place with lots to do. In the winter we’re hitting the slopes. In the summer, there’s mountains to climb, lakes – plenty to do. What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more into the music scene? Not necessarily, it was more the early experimentation of demos and originals trying to find our ‘sound.’ Once we had figured that out, it was just the process really of determining what we did and didn’t like production wise. It was all smooth sailing for there. What’s the best advice you have ever been given? Advice in terms of music – when you’re a musician, it’s all about the music. Everything else comes second. In general – your success is relative to how positively you influence the lives of others. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist? This sounds a little abrupt haha but don’t waste your time doing covers. If you want to be a recording, original artist, be known for your music – not anyone elses. What quote or saying do you always stick by? Never a second chance for a first impression When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget? Setlist… Backup guitar (we had one go bad at us one time in a show) Pedals! Capo – ugh sucks when we forget one for two songs in particular! Guitar cable (funnily enough, the house rarely has extra guitar cables…) Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you? Absolutely! All our accounts can be found here
