A LOVE FOR MUSIC FROM A YOUNG AGE, WRITING FROM THE AGE OF FIVE AND SINGING BEFORE SHE COULD TALK, LET ME INTRODUCE ‘YASMIN JANE’, WE CHAT ALL ABOUT HER LATEST RELEASE AND WHAT ELSE IS TO COME

What is your names?

Yasmin Jane

What is your genre of music?

I wouldn’t say that I am defined by a single genre, however I take influence from Electro pop and indie in particular.

Give us a little bio about you.

Hey okay, in a snapshot; I’m half Cypriot and half English, I love animals and am passionate about equality and fairness in all walks of life. I recently finished a masters in songwriting at Tileyard Studios and have since released two singles (‘Cute you think that’ and ‘Come a little closer’) which are both available to stream on Spotify and download on Itunes. I crave the studio and feel depressed if I spend too long away from writing music or being in the studio.

I started singing before I could talk and writing songs when I was 5, I still remember my first song called ‘Blue Bear’ I cannot recall the lyrics or melody though haha. I tend to write catchy hook ideas and am drawn to the emotional connection of a song.

I would describe my sound as The 1975 meets Ariana Grande mixed with Charlie XCX in one sweet package and am going to be delving deeper into the electronic atmospheric world of pop for my new projects.

What made you go in to music?

I used to sing before I could talk and have never wanted to do anything else. I have always been creative having melody ideas and lyrics randomly pop into my head(usually waking me up at 3am). When I was working in a supermarket at 16 I used to write lyrics on the till receipt paper and when I was meant to be revising for any exams I would be scribbling away lyrics on all my books. I went to university to please my family but I always knew music was what I wanted to do and my only real passion in life. Music helps me through difficult times and I love how it brings people together.

Are you a signed?

I just recently signed a record deal yes :D!

‘Come a little closer’ was written by me and songwriter Mac, we wrote together in December to a instrumental written by Duo, Elvns.

What was the writing process like?

We both listened to the backing and wrote down how it made us feel writing any colours, words and phrasing that sprung to mind, bouncing ideas back and forth. We wrote the song in about 4 hours, originally the instrumental had a rap on it so we worked around that coming up with the middle 8 over the rap which proved tricky. I came up with the hook melody ‘ You know my heart wants you so come a little closer’. Originally there was a 2 part chorus but we felt it had more impact as a repetition.

What was the recording process like?

The recording process for this song was very different to any songs I have previously recorded and also took the longest. Originally we recorded my demo vocals on the same day as writing the song, unfortunately I had a cold which affected my tone and led to me having to re record. Experimenting with different mics and techniques was a key element in the recording process to make sure the song felt the way it should.

What is the message you want listeners to take from the single?

The song actually has quite a sad meaning. When we wrote it it was about feeling powerless knowing a relationship was coming to the end, but looking back on the good times both knowing your souls will always be intertwined somehow. However I would never like to dictate what anyone feels when they listen to a song as music is so subjective and personal, no one person interprets anything the exact same. That is what I love the most about music there is no right or wrong just feelings.

Describe the track in two words

Vibe, Emotion

Can we expect a EP or Album this year or next year?

This year I will be releasing another song and an EP is definitely in the making for next year

What else can we expect from you this year?

A lot of different remixes of this song, gigs and surprises 🙂

Do you have any shows coming up or a tour in planning?

Planning a tour for next year which is in the early stages

If so where will you be heading?

The UK to begin with then expanding to Europe and the rest of the world.

Do you have any collaborations coming up with any upcoming artists?

I have a few up my sleeve that can’t be revealed yet but follow me to keep up with my journey

Would you be up for collaborations if other musicians wanted one with you? and who would they have to contact?

Yes I love collaborating, contact me directly on email is probably best

Do you play any instruments?

I do I play a bit of keys and guitar but not well enough to accompany myself yet, I just mess around with chords, but that is a definite goal for 2019

Who are your influences?

I have so many my biggest influences are The 1975, then I love Blondie, Eminem, Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, Foxes, Dua Lipa, the list really goes on to Etta James, Pink Floyd, The Clash etc.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?

My songs come from personal experiences, sounds cliche but life gives me inspiration, everything from sunsets to carpets. Usually my songs stem from something I am trying to say or my thoughts are trying to make sense of though.

Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?

Touring and releasing/ creating lots of new music, collaborating far and wide.

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?

That’s a tricky one I love seeing my family friends and animals and eating good food, I also love exhibitions and art galleries and plays.

What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more into the music scene?

I have always loved music since I was little but THE1975 really changed my view and took me on a different path specifically their song ‘Robbers’. I cannot explain the feeling it gives me, Matt Healys Raspy rich emotive vocals, the lyrics, the melody, the riffs, just everything about that song inspires me still.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

Be nice to everyone on your journey, collaboration is key, you never know the battles someone else is facing

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?

Trust your gut, the music industry is very hard like life it is a rollercoaster, celebrate every little success and enjoy the process. Make sure you keep creating and collaborating it’s such a magical experience. It is also okay to experiment.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?

Everything happens for a reason and believe in yourself, cause you got this.

Your coming off tour;

1/ Where do you go first?

Home

2/ Who do you see first?

My dog and my mum and probably my grandparents 🙂

3/What do you eat first?
