What is your name?
Reader

What is your genre of music?
Future RnB / Electronic

Give us a little bio about you.
I’m a singer, songwriter and producer. I live in London but I grew up in Somerset, and I just released my first EP ‘Change The Weather’.

What made you go in to music?
I just always gravitated towards music. Even when I was a kid, I would play games where I had to write songs for people in my family or re-write the theme tune to my favourite cartoons. Both my sisters work in music too and they’ve always been my biggest inspirations, so I guess it just seemed natural.

You have released your EP ‘Change The Weather’ tell us more about the album.
Change The Weather is my debut EP, I co-produced it with The Last Skeptik. It consists of 4 songs that all came from a place of distance and isolation, of being so caught-up in your own thoughts that you can’t see the present moment.

What was the writing process like?
‘Give Me’ and ‘Hovering’ are both songs that started with me writing alone, whereas ‘WSL’ and ‘Change The Weather’ I wrote in the studio with Skeptik. I think you can tell the difference lyrically between those two processes, because with him I feel driven to write more creatively and poetically, but when I write alone, my music is more like a confession where I work through my emotions as I go.

What was the recording process like?
Both myself and Skeptik have home studios, so we recorded, mixed and mastered the whole EP between our two bedrooms. He is such a talented producer and we work really well together, so the recording process felt very natural.

Describe each track in two words.
Give Me – Journey, Twofold
Change The Weather – Longing, Self-assured
WSL – Trippy, Cinematic
Hovering – Acoustic, Honest

What message are you trying to get out?
As a person, I just want to inspire other people. I want everyone around me to feel happy and strong. In terms of the music, I’m just trying to speak honestly about what I go through, so if someone hears it and relates to it, it might help them with their own situation.

What else do you have planned this year?
I’m moving to LA for 3 months next week!

Do you play any instruments?
I play saxophone, piano and guitar.

Who are your influences?
My biggest all-time influences are probably James Blake and Erykah Badu, but it depends what I’m listening to at the time. Right now, I’m mainly listening to Sza, IAMDDB, Jhene Aiko and Daniel Caesar…

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is that you are responsible for your own happiness. You might not be able to simply choose to be happy, but you can choose to change your situation, and you can choose how you react. It’s so empowering to think like that, because it allows you to really take control of your own life.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Life is a game, pick your team wisely.
