What is your name?
My name is Laura Llorens.
What is your genre of music?
I write and play indie pop-folk music.
Give us a little bio about you.
I am orinally from a small town in Wisconsin, in the mid-west of the USA. I’ve been in Paris for the past 15 years and really feel like a Parisian now. I started playing my songs in the Paris metro back in 2005 and I have spent about 10 years in the independant music scene here in France.
What made you go in to music? I have always really loved performing. Singing has also been a passion of mine since I was a little girl when I started my career on stage in musicals. I realised that I loved writing when I did some creative writing classes in high school. Writing my own music was a dream of mine and it is today an accomplishment for me that I am so proud of.
Are you a signed?
No
You have a brand new single coming out soon ‘Inside Out’, what can we expect from it?
The single has been released and I think it was well received. I’m hoping that people will get a greater understanding of mental health in the music industry and beyond.
Describe ‘Inside Out’ in two words .
Emtional Rollercoaster
What was the writing process like?
The writing process was a bit long… I had the music for several years before I knew what I wanted to write / sing about in the song and when my friend passed away, I knew I wanted to leave something for her, for us to remember her by and this music that I had was the perfect place to lay out my feelings and saddness.
What was the recording process like?
The recording process was quite intense. Once I was able to really tell the musicians what the song was about I think that it all helped get into a sort of zone of distress and we were able to sort of transpose that into the music.
What is the message you are trying to give out?
I guess it’s that we all have something to say and we are all in need of a place to say it / feel it in. We all desire a place to feel safe, a place of belonging, to say / feel what we are needing to say.
Who did you show first?
I first showed the images of the video to my husband..
Will we see a EP or Album this year?
Right now I am back in the creative process of writing new songs. There may be a single release in 2018 but most likely an album release in 2019.
Do you have any gigs or tours coming up?
For the moment I am really concentrating on writing new material. I’ve got some plans for shows in Paris and hopefully a visit to the UK as well either before the end of the year or in Springtime.
Do you play any instruments?
I am a guitarist and also play piano a bit.
Who are your influences?
My influences come from folk artists like Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchelll, Bob Dylan, Carole King but also from the older French Chanson scene like Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.
How do you get inspiration to write songs?
Sometimes it just takes a little time to process feelings and experiences but mostly I try to write a little every day to keep the flowing open ! I also try not to judge or re-read what I just wrote and allow myself the chance of writing just for pleasure. If I have strong feelings about something, i really try to get them out of my system and on to paper as quickly as possible.
Where do you see yourself now in 5 Years?
In 5 years time, I would love to have my 4th album, maybe a 5th album out and have the public know my a little more… perhaps even become a citizen of France !
When you’re not doing music, what do you do?
I am a mom of two little boys so I take care of them when they are not in school or at the day-care. I also give voice lessons and teach musical theatre here in Paris.
Would you be up for collaborating with new artists/bands , if so how could they contact you?
I WOULD LOVE TO ! Send me a message on my FB fan page or on twitter [Symbol]
What was the song you listened to most that influenced you to go more in to the music scene?
Wow, there are so many ! thinking back to the times when i heard my first real folk songs… Maybe a song like « California » by Joni Mitchell or « mercedes Benz » by Janis Joplin. But in those cases it wasn’t really the song but the voice that sang them that got me !
What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
You can’t run away from yourself, you’re stuck with you for the rest of your life so better get to loving who you are.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?
Don’t give into what other people want for you. Stay true to yourself and your uniqueness !
What quote or saying do you always stick by?
Whatever you are doing, love yourself for doing it. Whatever you are feeling, love yourself for feeling it.
