AUSTRALIAN SINGER/SONGWRITER’KATJA’ CHATS HER SINGLE ‘RIDE THE WAVE’ AND MORE CHECK OUT WHAT ELSE WAS SAID BELOW

What made you go in to music?Ever since I was really little, I have been obsessed with music and its ability to move people all over the world. Music became my escape and best friend during painful or lonely moments from when I was really little.

Tell us more about your track ‘Ride The Wave”.

I had the idea to use the Indigenous Australian musical instrument the Didgeridoo in a pop track for such a long time! I wanted to create a song that captured the magic of Australia sonically and lyrically.

You featured as ‘Elsa’ on Princess Rap Battles , how did that come about?

The Princess Rap Battle was presented to me by a mutual friend of the lady that had the idea to have Elsa rap against Snow White. I thought it was a hilarious idea! But it also was a really interesting look into women as roles models and how they were portrayed back in the 1930’s compared to now.

What was the process like when you filmed it?

The day of filming went so fast! I remember getting up super early to do my hair and make up before going onto set. The girls were so much fun! It was like going to a birthday party where we all dressed as our favorite princesses and filmed the experience!

Who are your influences?

This is so awesome! I have never really been asked this question without the word “music” attached to it. Because the truth is we are all influenced by so many. I am honestly mostly influenced by people who choose to give love and kindness. There are some amazing people that I have had the opportunity to meet, such as the warriors, survivors and family members of those that have passed, on my recent trip to Atlanta with the Doctors Hospital where I performed at the Relay for Life. Every single person had a story filled with heartache, struggle and strength.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?

Every experience inspires me to write music. I am that girl that sits in the corner, by herself, at a party just watching. Creepy? Yeah maybe a little. I am so intrigued by people, how they interact. What motivates us, what makes us passionate. Of course, the crazy mystery that is love is a huge collaborator with my music. Is there a certain someone out there – the other half of me? Will I know them if I met them? And all the crap we have to sift through on the journey to finding them.

If you could collaborate with one another Artist who would it be?

CARLOS SANTANA! His soul is a melody!

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?

I am a bit of a gaming geek, so if I am not writing, producing or recording, you will probably find me sitting on my ass wth a big bag of chips playing Witcher 3 with my dog beside me. I will also usually be live streaming to #Katjators (like Gladiators only more awesome!)

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
That which you resist, persists. Meaning don’t try to repress your emotions. Don’t deny your feelings or your instincts.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?

The best advice I can give, is be willing to do it all yourself. If you are truly passionate about art, music and expressing experiences and emotion through music, you will find a way to do it. Don’t wait around for someone to give you permission or to do it for you.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?

“True friends stab you in the front” Oscar Wilde.

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you cannot forget?
1. Me! When all else fails, I can just stand up and sing!

2. My microphone

3. Music

4. In ear monitors

5. WATER! (Although, most of the time I forget to drink water during my sets)
