What are your full names/who does what?/who writes the songs?
The line up is:
- Daisy Chute, lead vocals, banjo, guitar & ukulele
- Luke Bateman, keyboards, backing vocals
- Matthew Davis, bass & guitar
- Sarah Crisp, violin & viola
The songs are largely composed by the band, others by Matthew.
What is your band’s genre?
Our music’s been described as alt-folk. We like to think of it as ‘po-mo-fo’ (post modern folk!) It’s an eclectic and distinctive mix of pop, folk, rock and classical influences.
Give us a little bio of the band and you guys as individuals
Three and Me formed in Camberwell, SE London, in October 2012. Matthew, Sarah & Luke were previously working with another singer which did not quite work out so Matthew got in touch with Daisy. Our first gig was at Cadogan Hall supporting Beverley Knight. The rest is…the future.
- Daisy was previously a member of Universal classical crossover band ‘All Angels’, has orchestrated film music for composer Ilan Eshkeri and has worked with a wide range of artists including Andy Burrows, Ray Davies and Kasabian.
- Matthew was formerly signed to EMI as a musician and songwriter and has been writing with Stuart Moxham from cult band Young Marble Giants and recording with singer Kelli-Leigh.
- Sarah is in hot demand for a wide range of musical projects and is currently working in the theatre with Goldfrapp.
- Luke is an award-winning performer and writer in London’s West End.
Where did you get the band name from?
Sarah came up with the name after a day spent by us drinking wine and sipping tea….we’ve never quite worked out who are the three and who is the me!
Are you signed?/When will you be releasing material?
We’ve just released our debut, eponymously titled, EP on our own label, 3C Records which is available from iTunes, Spotify, Amazon et al.
We’re about to shoot our first video of ‘Who are You?’ from the EP, and will be releasing a charity single in the autumn. Our 1st album should be out early next year.
We have gigged extensively in London.
Who are the band’s influences?
From folk bands to film music and from Britpop to Bach.
What are your backgrounds whether it’s in music or not?
Matthew: studied politics at Cardiff Uni and I’ve been a charity worker and songwriter ever since…
Luke: studied music all my life
Sarah: classical violin lessons…
Daisy: It’s always been music – and occasionally a bit of acting too. I sang as a cathedral chorister in my home city Edinburgh before moving to Purcell School of Music in Watford at 16.
How did music come in to your lives and when did you start doing it?
Matthew: My dad gigged as a jazz drummer and I was brought up on an extraordinary mix of music: Bach, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Fats Waller, West African beat music, the Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Syd Barrett and, of course, the Beatles.
Daisy: My mum had jazz piano lessons whilst pregnant with me and claimed I came out knowing all the songs she’d learnt! In fact my first album was filled with some of those very same jazz standards. I started young with my first song at the age of 3 entitled ‘I like shopping’ – still too true today! I had my first professional gig at 9 singing Cosette for Cameron Mackintosh’s UK tour of Les Miserables…it’s been downhill ever since!
Luke: classical piano lessons aged 5 – my dad is a conductor
Sarah: music lessons began aged 8
How do you get inspiration to write songs?
Matthew: It varies. For instance, ‘Count the Cost’ from our EP is based on the life of the poet Sylvia Plath. Another of our songs, ‘Beautiful You’ was inspired by a newspaper story about a girl who’d been in a destructive relationship then met a man who helped her repair her life. Other times, of course, my songs are based on my own life – and loves.
Luke: God only knows where it comes from – magic?
Daisy: Either songs emerge from things you observe in others’ lives or from delving deeper into your own Writing lyrics together has been a different but positive experience – it’s usually a very personal introspective thing but we’ve tried a different way of going about it for some of the songs we’ve written together.
Where do you see the band in 2-5 years time?
The music business is a tough yet inspiring place to be in. We would like to have released albums that mean something to people and be playing festivals in the sun….

Matthew: Cambridge Folk Festival; Brixton Academy
Daisy: A music lover’s living room; Roslyn Chapel in Edinburgh
Luke: Royal Albert Hall; Glastonbury main stage
Sarah: Shepherd’s Bush Empire; on Broadway!

If you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?
Matthew: Writing more fiction for children; watching Spurs away games!
Luke: I can’t imagine it!
Sarah: Milliner
Daisy: Something creative: writer, artist, film director…

The next, great, Scandinavian TV noir!
