Music of the Future – Lauren Marsh – WOO!
Come Take a READ and get to know Up and coming NJ Girl Lauren and be sure you are following her!
How old are you?
I am currently 22 and will be 23 on October 9th. It’s been pretty cool to share the same birthday as John Lennon. I’m also really looking forward to my Record Release and Birthday performance on October 12th at Havana in New Hope, PA.
What is your genre of music?
My music fits within the indie/pop/rock realm. I’ve studied and listen to all sorts of genres from classical, to jazz, to classic rock, heavy rock, but my writing tends to be indie/pop with flavors of rock and jazz.
Give a Little Bio of yourself.
I began writing original songs when I was 14, but never performed one of my songs live until I was in college. I had always wanted to pursue a career in jazz voice, however as I began studying jazz, I found myself composing songs instead of practicing my jazz vocal assignments. Soon enough, my desire and passion for writing songs took over and I decided to pursue songwriting and performing.
I feel extremely fortunate to have had the recognition I’ve received since releasing my debut EP “Ready for Takeoff” only two years ago in Oct, 2012. Since then my debut EP has been honored with the Jersey Acoustic Music Award for “Top Indie EP of the Year” while my artistry was nominated in four additional categories. Two of my songs, “Home” and “Stranger” were each individually selected by the company Screenvision to be in their eight-song pre-show entertainment aired in 8,000 movie theatres nationwide alongside bands and artists like Cassadee Pope, Arctic Monkeys, GroupLove, and the Goo Goo Dolls. My single “Stranger”, released in Sept. 2013, was also selected by an independent production company out of Ontario to be featured in the indie film “Blood Empires” and my YouTube channel has recently reached over 200,000 views. Now I’m currently a couple weeks away from having my new record “The Incurable Heart” available to the world.
How long have you been doing music?
I’ve always been involved in something music related, whether it’s been the school choir, orchestra, School of Rock, or a band. I don’t really know if I’ve ever not been involved in music. Even when I was little, in the back of the car, sitting in my car seat, I would be singing along to all the songs on the radio or cassette tape.
What made you go in to music?
There’s nothing else that I feel this passionate about. I could talk music all day. It’s not only my dream to be a successful singer-songwriter and performer, but it’s also a passion, to continue learning and broadening my abilities as an artist.
What Instruments do you play?
I play piano and ukulele. I sing and I also attempt the bass and the guitar. I actually use to play bass in my friend’s band, still not sure why he let me do that haha.
Are you a Signed Artist?
I am an unsigned, independent artist and I love every second of it!
Who are your influences?
I try to listen to as much music as possible, however I would say some of my main influences are Sara Bareilles, Adele, Regina Spektor, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz, and Jewel. I also love Renee Olstead and the work that she’s done on her records. These are just some of the new artists that I try to be listening to, but much of my musical background was grown around Led Zeppelin, Ella Fitzgerald, David Lanz, and Pink Floyd.
When will you be releasing new music?
My new record “The Incurable Heart (Deluxe Edition)” became available for preorder on Tuesday September 2nd, 2014 and will officially go live and be available everywhere on September 23rd, 2014. BE READY!!!
How do you get inspiration to write songs?
My inspiration comes from life experiences, whether it’s something that I’ve been through or something that someone very close to me has been through. Sometimes when I’m writing, I may not really know what exactly I’m writing about. But then in the end when it’s done, I realize exactly how it relates to me or someone else. Then other times I know exactly what I want to say and how the story is going to flow. There’s never one set way that a song comes about, and each song has its own story and way of being written.
Where is your dream place to perform (Country)?
I would absolutely love to perform at Madison Square Garden in NYC. I can only imagine what it feels like to perform in front of so many people. I’ve always been a New Jersey girl, going in and out of NYC. I went to school right outside the city and there’s nothing like it anywhere else. Having the opportunity to perform in such a historically rich venue would truly be a dreamlike experience.
Who would you like to perform with, if you got the chance?
There are so many artists I would love to share a stage with. Especially artists like Adele, Sara Bareilles, Bruno Mars, etc their level of energy and skill is unparalleled and I hope to share stages with many artists.
Where do you see yourself in 2-5 years?
Well I always want to be putting out more music, but I would also like experience touring on either a national or international level.
If you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?
I absolutely love animals! Anything from dogs, cats, horses, snakes, bunnies, etc. If I didn’t get into music I could see myself being a veterinarian or trainer of some sort.
Who is your favorite Artist or Band at The Moment?
I don’t really know if I have a favorite, but I’ve recently been listening to a lot more country music than I think I ever did, and songwriters like Hunter Hays and The Band Perry are very inspiring. I will always love work done by Adele and Sara Bareilles, so it’s fun to explore new artists and genres, getting a feel for their sound.
If you could go on Tour with any Singer or Band from USA who would it be and why?
Just like sharing the stage, I would love to tour with Sara Bareilles, Adele, Bruno Mars, Ingrid Michaelson, or Jason Mraz, but touring with singer-songwriters like Stacy Clark would also be an amazing experience.
If you could go on Tour with any Singer or Band from UK who would it be and why?
As far as UK artists I think Adele would definitely be a top choice haha, but Olly Murs, Paolo Nutini, Kate Nash, Emeli Sande, Lily Allen, and Ella Henderson would all be fantastic to tour with.
What was the first song you wrote? The first song I ever wrote was definitely about a crush I had back when I was very young haha. The song was very basic in it’s structure, but was also very honest. I think honesty is what makes a song genuinely heartfelt. I believe that the honesty of a song is what reaches people in that very special way that only songs have of speaking to us.
